Actually, it would have been nice to see the 5DMKIV offered without an AA filter.

NO NO NO NO.

I refuse to buy a camera that has no AA filter unless its something of a fuji type. You know how sucky it is to get aliasing in your photos... so hard to correct. I have ZERO issues with the level of detail the 5D4 offers.

Yes, with the right (or rather, "wrong") subjects. But, it's not that cameras with AA filters never suffer from moire, it's just that they're less prone.

This review has some useful images and comparisons: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-5Ds-R.aspx (external link)

That's why both Canon and Nikon offer both but at the resolutions of these cameras, moire just isn't as big an issue as lower resolution cameras.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Interesting link. The difference in sharpness is very noticeable.

I wish the AA filter could be controlled - turned on and off - via the firmware.....or at least a user removable filter. Then you'd have the best of both worlds.

..... but this does make me think that it sure would be good for others to stop assuming their needs are the only ones that matter or that can and in some cases should be considered by manufacturers.

You are insightful!

It makes up what feels like at least 95% of the senseless disagreement we see on forums like this. If sentences begin or end with, "for my needs", there's really nothing to argue. :)

Interesting timing of your reply ;)

Back to that "for my needs" caveat.

Two versions would harm no one, and given that massive 30MP, I am sure there are those that would in fact by the "R" version if Canon would offer it.

I have never had an issue with moire using my 5DSR.

Those three comments sum the issue up perfectly; more MP == less chance of moire issues. No AA filter is useful for detail, and doesn't seem to bite some shooters at all, but for others it is an issue.

As far as I recall, Nikon has started leaving out the AA filter in more cameras (some high-ish MP crop bodies I think) so they must be sufficiently confident that it's highly unlikely to bite most shooters. But, a 21MP Nikon crop is only the pixel density of a 47MP full frame (i.e. ballpark the 5DS/5DSR), so Canon obviously felt that still wasn't enough density to avoid problems.

Exactly.

...and thus those that would like to see a 5D4-R version are barking up the right tree, with 30MP it's bumping right up there with the 36MP exmor.

TBH I wouldn't have wanted to see a 5D4R; it would have given me a really difficult purchasing decision ;-)a

I have to exercise vigorously for a year every time I know I am going to be doing this 3-day Trek with my church youth group every 4 years because it's in the wilderness in VA, I am dressed like a pioneer, and I have to carry 2 DSLR's 3 lenses, 4 cups of water, snacks, a hat, and sun screen. I do this for 3 days. I even have a portable electric generator so at night I can upload the images to a portable hard drive, format the cards and do it all over again. My poor batteries almost die every night.

The gear is heavy, but I think those of us who shoot a lot are okay with it. I can hold my 7D2 with 70-200 2.8 IS II with just my right hand and shoot in a large room. Add the flash and I think my arm will fall off, but I've done it!

Curious about the DR being not as good as the N*kon. I know the SONY is the standard for video these days. I think the 5DIV sensor is really nice. Can't wait to get out this weekend. There is a thunder storm coming. I may do some tripod lightning tries.

I consider this as dedicated shooting. If I'm doing dedicated shooting, sure, weight isnt a huge issue, but if you're just strolling with your kids, I would consider that as incidental shooting, and weight can matter. My wife thinks the EOS-M is too big :-P

When it comes to dedicated shooting, I have a fairly high threshold for weight, but if I'm carrying the baby around, or shopping bags? last thing I want is a lot more weight.

Yeah, I'd like a 5D4R myself, but I will be fine (as is) for now.
