Canon 5D Mark IV -- Time to Discuss!

I guess it comes down to what they can do in a set retail price......this camera is clearly aimed and designed at retail price of around £3500 as were previous 5D models. At this price you get ONE DIGIC processor and this will always limit what the camera can do. With the 1DXII you get two DIGIC processors which opens up a lot more potential but at a cost of £5200 !!. I personally think the 5D4 spec is spot on for this price, but being a 1DXII owner it makes me a little disappointed about the bigger sensor and slightly improved funtionality in the 5D4 seeing as the development of these cameras was done in parallel. Canon WERE capable of making a camera that we all want which has all the best bits of the 1DXII, 5DSR and the new 5D4 but instead they chose not to....and chose to release 3 compromised cameras instead. I use the term compromised loosely as these are still 3 amazing cameras.

Compromise and specialisation are two sides of the same coin though.

You have a 50 megapixel, low frame rate, landscape/studio/archi​tectural body, and at the opposite end; a 20 megapixel high frame rate body (with the 5D4 being roughly in the middle).

The 5Ds could do with more low ISO DR, and I think the 5D4 could do with 1 to 2 more frames per second (and maybe a slightly deeper buffer).

With luck Canon may end up getting some heat over the cropping in 4k on this new body so maybe they will find a way of doing something better in a firmware upgrade. However they haven't generally launched that major new features in firmware upgrades, and scaling the whole sensor down to 4k resolution at 30fps will require hardware acceleration.

I posted in another thread the other day about the old 7D v 5D2 arguments that used to pop up all the time. The supposed extra wow factor could never been seen for a variety of excuses. Today, the Sony/Nikon high MP cameras clearly show how good the detail captured is. ( As well as the 5DS/r probably but I don't frequent Canon threads on here that much these days ).
I suppose Canon could have gone to mid 30's to 40 without eating into 5DSr sales but the extra MP would probably make the 1DX2 IQ poor by comparison. When I had an email the other morning announcing the 5D4 I read through the specs and nothing stood out for me that would make me choose this over an A7rii. When I saw the price here in the UK it immediately became a non starter. Correct me if I'm wrong but is there anything on that camera that hasn't been borrowed from another model ? I know the sensor is new but it probably isn't going to top the Sony for DR which is much cheaper model. The A7rii was announced with lots of bells and whistles not available in other models and justified its price tag. Also Sony isn't probably that far from a new model being announced making me excited about what it could contain.

Also with Hasselblad releasing the X1D it seems MF is getting aggressive in its pricing strategy..........

The Dual Pixel raw feature is new to this camera. Most of the rest seems to be available tech turned up to the next step.

Note that the a7Rii is a different beast; superb image quality, but I see loads of reports about bad battery life and inability to track moving subjects like a DSLR.

Agreed on the UK pricing though; there's high, then there's offensive.

I was very surprised by 30.4mp. I am completely happy with my 22.3mp of the 5D3 so having 30 is a major improvement that I simply wasn't even interested in but will gladly take it.

It's his schtick, you should see his impressions of the 80D. I think he generates a lot of clicks by hating on Canon, and then he goes out and shoots with them anyway.

I think his point (made in other videos I've seen) about the poor quality of the LCDs on DSLRs is valid. In general, the Japanese do seem to favour caution over risk when it comes to product design. It tends to make for good reliability, but it would be interesting to see someone with both the cash and willingness to take risks to have a go at building such a product.

Maybe a fan site that went horribly wrong(pissed user)? Like cinema 5d would be a joke these days and especially after this announcement.

I'd rather have the reliability than bold product that become unstable... overheat and not work. stuff like wedding photography??? omg HAVE to have reliable period.... end of story period. It's why DSLR are so common for wedding guys. They WORK.

That's true, but I do feel that innovation and design flair does tend to lose out. Big companies with a large product lineup are also more prone to crippling features in order to protect other models and ranges.

Almost feels to me like the hype for that lens has been lost in press about the camera.

TBH the 16-35 f/4 IS is so darn good that I can only really see the new lens being critical for astro guys that need f/2.8. If I'm shooting architecture or interiors I want to stop down a bit (DOF and more sharpness), and I'd trade a smaller aperture and lower ISO against the IS, vs f/2.8 and no IS.

Honestly as an astro guy myself, I would add the Rokinon 14/2.8 to the 16-35/4 IS or just buy a Tamron 15-30/2.8 VC. I see the 16-35/2.8 III as more of an event shooter lens.
