It must be time to start a new thread titled,

OMG my photos are too sharp! What can I do? I have too much dynamic range! Do all my photos has to be in focus?

I think this is the first body Canon has released, along with the 1Dx2, where there are no, "I didn't RTFM and my pictures are OOF" threads.

Talley... let me tell you something about hurt because this camera has caused me a ton of it. I rarely take portraits of my girlfriend. In fact the last time I did a serious portrait session with her was when I got the 5D3. So last week we went out and we did a 5D4 portrait session. When I start looking at the RAW files my girlfriend remarked that the sensor seems to pick up a lot more detail because compared to the 5D3 she seems to have a lot more blemishes and imperfections in her skin. That's when I put my foot in my mouth and suggested that 4.5 years ago when I got the 5D3 her skin might have been in better shape. I don't have to tell you how that went over. Then just yesterday we are out for a walk again and I made some off the cuff remark that I should get some more serious portrait primes because since the dog passed away she's become my favourite subject. Been pretty quiet in the house since. I know I was an insensitive twit but I'm still sharing blame with the 5D4.

I see you have taken up my family motto. Never put one foot in your mouth when theirs room for two. :p

I put a protective glass on mine and doesn't affect the touch funtions.

Anyone got some challenging landscape or other images with a broad dynamic range that they wouldn't mind sharing RAW files for? I really want to see for myself in LR what can be done with these.

So, I've just received my replacement 5D4 (after the original MFA problems).

I haven't had chance to test it on a proper rig yet, but a careful "put it on a table and don't move it" MFA style test showed that the centre point needs about -3 MFA at 70mm on my 24-70II (the previous body was +3, so this is all pretty low and nothing to worry about).

On the previous body, the right sided points were similar to the centre, but the left sided points required a good +10 on top of the value for the center; i.e. 10+3=13).

On this body, the right sided points are around +2, and one of the left points (the "worst") is +6. The difference between the -3 for the centre and +6 is about the same order of difference to the previous body.

However, unlike the previous body, I do seem to be getting reasonable results with a compromised setting of 0 (i.e. taking a few test shots with various AF points - racking the lens way out of focus before each shot).

I'm at a bit of a loss to explain this, as my 5D3 seemed to be quite consistent across the AF points.

My test setup is a standard DotTune process, but also nailing (Liveview) focus on areas that are under an outer AF point (rather than just the centre), then testing that AF point through the viewfinder. I.e. I'm not focusing using a centre point then trying to MFA an outer point (as that would be susceptible to the test chart and camera not being perfectly aligned, and probably field curvature I'd guess).

Anyone else done a DotTune MFA test with points other than the centre?

High megapixel? These problems may have existed, you never noticed with lower pixel pitch.

No - it's actually the AF confirmation dot I'm going from in terms of detecting the ranges.

what I'm trying to get at is that micro adjust on a higher mp camera may be different? I'm not completely sure. I'm guessing that the micro movements are even finer than the 5D3 by a tune of 50%, so on a 5D3, dot tune of +6 is equivalent to +9 on a 5D4, since the pixel pitch is finer? just a theory, as I dont know how much exactly is a micro movement.

Micro adjustments are done in relation to units of depths-of-focus. If you are one to pixel peep, then you will probably spend a bit more time finding that exact AFMA value.

It is really quite easy to MFA, if you have asphalt or a manicured lawn. A brightly colored object about the size of your fix is all that is needed, and you drop it off in the yard or hard surface, and walk back. When the object just covers the center AF point, focus and take a shot. If the grass or asphalt shows focus in front of the object, put in + values (to add distance between you and the focal point), or - values to bring the focus closer.

Start with 8 at a time, then halve that once, then halve that one more time, as you take a few test shots each of the 3 steps.

At football games, I use yard markers, at basketball games, I use courtside chair legs across from me, or other stationary object during pre-game warmups.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

You have plenty of time then to read the 600+ page manual before tomorrow right?
