Question: what are you defining by dynamic range? The 5D3 had much better higher ISO noise than the 5D2, and the 1Dx had better again, but all three had similar low ISO DR. See here https://www.dxomark.com …-5D-Mark-II___795_753_483 (external link) and select Measurements, Dynamic Range.

The 5D4 annihilates the 5D3 and original 1Dx for low ISO DR, and gets fairly close at higher ISOs: https://www.dxomark.com …on-EOS-1Dx___1106_795_753 (external link)

In fact, it's pretty competitive with the 1Dx2 across the board: https://www.dxomark.com …-Mark-III___1106_1071_795 (external link)

Thanks. I recall that the lack of equivalent dynamic range in MY (two cameras tested) 5D III was across the board. The range from dark shadow to bright whites that could be captured in an image. Not how recoverable they are, but the levels of brightness range. I recall someone somewhere saying it was 10 bit in 5D II and maybe 12 bit in other bodies? Sketchy on that.

I found 5D II to be superior as well as 6D in this single regard to the 5D III. Obviously there were more benefits to the II over those two cameras, but DR and heavily weighted evaluative exposure to the focus point (as I am fond of focus and recompose) did not work for me. My 1D X has not been an issue in either regard. I would love to upgrade my 6D if the IV also does not have these issues. Most here are saying it does not.

Dynamic range and tonal range are 2 different things, I suspect you mean more around the tonal range or contrast range.

Maybe you saw a difference between those 3 cameras related to this: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/histograms1.htm (external link)

Postman bought me a nice present today so I'm officially in the club now....I went for an import and saved £700 on the list price...
Can I use Lightroom 5 or do I need to upgrade to Lightroom 6 ?
Looking forward to calibrating my lenses and shooting at the weekend...

Congratulations! You will need LR 6.7 to enable you to import the raw files. (Or CC).

So I'm noticing a weird behavior and not sure what's going on.

I always select my own focus point with the joystick. I don't have a registered AF point.

Whenever I bring the camera back to my face, I see the focus point in the middle (regardless of where it ended with the last shot), then it will 'wake up', move the focus point to where it was last left and blink red. This is without touching a button and the camera is still awake. Does anyone know what this behavior it? I'm surely looking something over...

I like gear and I have too much.

Is the orientation assigned AF point set? Could that be what is happening?

I think the technical term is "early adopter annoyances!" ;)

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

If you think the 5DII had superior DR you were not pulling the shadows.... that was the single worst camera Canon ever created for shadow recovery. IMO. Even now when I go back and try to re-process I shake my head.

I have to agree. Since getting some different cameras, and now have something to compare, I can now appreciate how breathtakingly bad the 5DII is for shadow recovery.

One of the questions people seem to have on this camera, especially bird photographers like myself, is "how croppable is the 5D IV"? Some folks may be going from a 7D II (like I did) and wondering how much reach they will be giving up, or maybe coming from a lower MP FF camera and wondering if the 30 MP adds up to more cropability.

Here's a full frame shot and a crop from the same image that I took over the weekend. Note that this was on a gloomy day with poor light, so it's a worst-case scenario. It demonstrates well I think that the camera can perform very well if cropping is needed.

I also did some controlled tests indoors and found that the 5D IV with a 1.4x III cropped will indeed out-resolve a bare 7d II (but not a 7d II with 1.4x), so adding a 1.4x can regain the lost reach, plus a wee-bit. The higher ISO capability can easily make up for the lost stop in light.

Hope this is helpful.
