Clearly my comment was simply a joke, but you actually raise a possible serious explanation!
Now I am indeed curious.

I doubt that mine was from the same batch as I bought an import model but I will recover the serial number from DPP out of interest..Maybe we can build a database....;-)a

My 500f4 has been spot on with previous bodies so hopefully the exchange body will cure my problems.....have to be pretty unlucky to get 2 lemons in a row...

So far most my lenses are around the +10 to +14 range on my 5D4 when previously they were in the near zero range. I think it's just the body to be honest.

I did try it out straight out of the box, noticed the focus was off but thought MFA would fix it. It doesnt seem to matter what values you dial in the problem still persists....
Its all boxed up ready to return now so we will have to see what the new body brings to the game..

Obviously you just got e defective one. It happens with all products. I bet the next one will be fine.

You just seem disappointed rather than bent out of shape. The internet way would have been to rant and rave, post to every forum and social media, declare canon have lost their way and you are within a bees dick of changing to Sony etc. Frankly I a disappointed with your mature reaction.

Sounds like the best option, like I stated and Jake noticed too, that in a few of those shots, nothing is very sharp, and at 1/800th, I would think at least a few would be pretty good in the samples you provided. It is almost like the camera is telling the lens to jitter during the shot. Do you remember what you had your AF priorities (first and second) set to? I think you would want focus priority vs burst priority for both.

Straying slightly off topic: what do others have their cameras set to? Out of the box the 5D4 is focus priority for single shot, and balanced for AI Servo (for both the first and subsequent shots).

I can kinda see the idea/value in the balanced setting; getting a slightly out of focus shot of that critical moment in a sports event is better than a sharp shot a second later, but my servo shooting tends to be kids (so I can usually request a... errr... "re-run"). Seems to me that focus priority would be the better choice, no?

When testing for AF, I set both to focus and work from there.

Focus priority was set to focus on the first shot and left at factory setting for second shot..

I just discovered today that you can AF and shutter separately in the remote app even if your focus has been taken off the shutter button. In the settings of the remote app there is an option to show the AF focus button. It will appear in the app as a small button beside the shutter button. You can AF and then trigger the shutter without having to move BB focus back to the shutter button.

Sounds pretty awesome. now, is there a trick to swap between two AF modes? IE. Auto selection AF and then whatever mode you have it on now? right now, i have to toggle through 4-5 different modes before I get to the one I want, and wanted to see if there was an easier way.

If my understanding is correct you are asking about switching the Af area selection. The app uses live view so you are restricted to the 3 AF selections for that mode - Tracking, Flexi-zone - multi and Flexi-zone - Single. You can access and change the zone in the app via the menu (the little slider button on the bottom right). You can also change EC, ISO, drive shutter speed and aperture (depending on your shooting mode). Hope I understood your question properly.

sorry, i meant in regular viewfinder view. So what im trying to do is to find a way to quickly change from spot AF, to zone( auto) AF, without having to go through all the modes inbetween, if im not careful and since the AF selection only goes forward for me, I can accidentally skip the one I want, and then have to cycle through all the modes again.

If I'm understanding correctly, you can limit which AF area selection modes that you can cycle through.

Yes. As mentioned in the above post you can limit the number of options. In the AF section of the menu the 3rd option of tab 4 will allow you to disable the selections you don't need. Better than this IMO is customizing other buttons such as the FEL as an alternate AF scenario. I only use 2 selections most of the time so I just engage the alternate scenario to access it. This is done in the custom functions menu. Hope that helps.

ok, i'll play around with it a bit. i just switched over to back button focusing, and so far, im loving it. and with the wide AF coverage on the 5d4, it actually pretty darn useful for me. Now im playing around with the video. you know what, the DPAF servo face tracking is awesome. however, now you run into a lot of the AF noise with the built in mic. I'm looking for some external mics that I can mount on the hotshoe to get rid of that noise. do you guys have any recommendations? I've seen the rode videomic go and takstar sgc-598. do you guys have any experience with these products?

The STM lenses help quite a bit with the noise, but Rode mics seem to be pretty prevalent among shooters in this area.

Both my 40 STM and 50 STM require 0 MFA and all my L glass require some sort of adjustment one way or the other. Funny.
