Any Canon outside with a strobe and fast lens is good for portraits. :) but yes the 5d4 is no exception!

I'm enjoying my 5DM4. My primary camera before was a 5DM3. Honestly I'm not sure I see much difference yet for the type of photography I do, but I do like it. I've used the touch screen on the back by accident more than on purpose!

I had a strange thing yesterday I was using my 5D4 with 70-200 IS II and then when I put my 1.4 TC III on the images were blurred as anything. has anyone else experienced this? The image looked fine in the viewfinder but blurred when reviewing. I don't think the focus was off as nothing at all was sharp in the whole image. I can't seem to recreate the problem....

The sensor records what is seen, most likely the TC caused your shutter speed to halve, and you had motion blur.

It was 1/1000 at f/4 I would have thought that was enough to rule our motion blur ?

Strange. Could it be that the plane of focus is somewhere between the brow of the rise in the foreground and the tractor? There is nothing but air in that region (which I imagine is a good distance given foreshortening) but it could be that some of it is in perfect focus.

Clutching at straws, here.

David.

It is either the TC IQ, a filter, or motion. The sensor isn't going to cause blur, something in the optical path, or motion, either by the photographer or via the IS system.

Did you turn off the IS to see if maybe the IS was spooling up or acting funny with the TC and caused the issue?

My guesses now seeing the picture are now in this order:

1) Filter?
2) Haze
3) IS causing issues
4) Motion

I was trying this morning to recreate the problem but didn't think of IS, but at 1/1000 of a second I wouldn't have thought IS would cause any problems? It could possibly be haze but I have never experienced problems like this just from haze. I'll have a look at IS, the TC always worked flawlessly with the 5D3 and same lens

IS needs to "settle in", so if you snap a pic as the IS is starting up, you could have an impact. If you are at those faster shutter speeds, I suggest just turning off IS to make sure it never causes an issue. I would start some limiting testing of subject material at different distances to see a) if there is an issue with the lens/TC combo, and b) if so, when does it start to manifest.

However, you might be better asking this question over in the Lens forum, because this really wouldn't be a 5D4 specific thing (there is always a possibility there is something screwy in the 5D4 firmware regarding AF with lens+TC though, cannot rule this out 100%), and you would end up with more suggestions/analysis in that forum.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=33

Somebody might have had this same issue, but had a different camera than the 5D4.

Thanks I will do, only posted here as my 5D3 with that setup is fine so assumed it was a 5D4 issue.

Many thanks

I think it's atmosphere (not haze, just shimmery air). The tractor is quite a ways away on a sunny day. I was recently at an airshow and shot this photo of people that were maybe 1/4 mile away. Nothing is technically "in focus," but it's due to shimmery air. The equipment was 1DX2 + 1.4x III + 100-400 II.

On the other hand, here is a photo taken with the same equipment, but shooting upwards at a much closer object. It's pretty sharp.

Atmosphere can do weird things.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.
