I think it's atmosphere (not haze, just shimmery air). The tractor is quite a ways away on a sunny day. I was recently at an airshow and shot this photo of people that were maybe 1/4 mile away. Nothing is technically "in focus," but it's due to shimmery air. The equipment was 1DX2 + 1.4x III + 100-400 II.

On the other hand, here is a photo taken with the same equipment, but shooting upwards at a much closer object. It's pretty sharp.

Atmosphere can do weird things.

Yep, I'd bet on this appraisal.

Thanks all. I had never considered haze - in all the years I have never come across this!

If you have good binoculars, take them along. You can often check our where the atmospherics are roiling and distorting, and save yourself the trouble of trying to shoot through it...which you can't.

That's not a bad idea! I didn't notice it through the viewfinder....

That's what a lot of people in search of reach overlook. You can have a 10,000 mm f/2.0 lens and take a macro picture of a pimple on a bird's butt from a mile away, but that just means you're shooting through more atmosphere than if you were closer with a shorter lens. Worse, you're magnifying every imperfection in that atmosphere whether it's heat distortion, mist, haze, etc.

Cropping files is not reach.

Cropping sensors is not reach.

Higher magnification is not reach.

Higher pixel density is not reach.

REACHING the subject, literally, with your entrance pupil, is the only real "reach".

I would've thought that if you reached a pimple on a bird's butt using your entrance pupil it might complain, no?

If you are taking pics of a pimple on what you think is a bird's butt, you might want to zoom out a bit and see what you are really aiming at, since birds can't get pimples! It might just be that weird neighbor that likes to sunbathe in the nude.

I find the best way is to put my camera into Live view and then zoom in fully, even on reasonably cold days you can see how much things are moving. Quite the eye opener. :)

I'm thinking the 100mm macro with the subject a foot away is a better choice here. :)

I have taken photos of many, many animal butts including birds. Never seen a pimple. :-)

I don't know if it's just me or not but I find I have to be really careful with highlights on the 5D4. With the 5D3 I sometimes overexposed by 1/3 of a stop but never now, often under by 1/3 stop. Has anyone else noticed anything similar?
