My guess, is that Dual Pixel RAW and the giant file sizes that come with it was a late addition to the 5D4, long after the body, electronics, and buffers were designed.

Am I crazy to assume that dual pixel RAW will be available to the 1Dx2 in a firmware update?

If it was not ready from prime time for the 1Dx2, then it certainly is probable that the 5D4 was long since "cooked" re: hardware before dual pixel RAW was a usable reality.

Maybe that is one problem Canon needs to address to ensure they stay on top. Their product development lifecycle at times seems to take so long that they are behind the technology of the time when they are finally ready to release a product. Also the lifecycle of the 1dx2 is about as long and it had time to put the Cfast in that.

I would imagine that a firmware dual pixel for the 1dx2 is a possibility but so could have many other technologies over the years that didn't. I was very please with the 7D increased buffer capability upgrade but I don't hold my breath for these type of things.

And actually the more I think of it, I don't see why you would need to shift focus with dual pixel for wedding and portrait type with this camera. My old 7D basically doesn't miss focus in these type of situations. The 5D4 with its massively better AF system isn't going to miss at all in those situations. Where I see that you would really need the focus shift might just be limited to sports situations where you need a bigger buffer.

I think of it as insurance. are you saying you've NEVER missed a good shot because of focus? You may be the first in the industry to claim this if you say yes.

And if you are shooting non-action/high value shots why not shoot in Dual pixel? Memory cards are cheap!

Sure I have missed shots but it is rare with my 7D and I am going to bet missing non action shots is going to be almost nonexistent with the much better AF in the 5D4. Any missed shots will not be the cameras fault I would bet.

I am not saying to not use it, but rather that it is more important in situations where you would also want a larger buffer.

Could be a life saver for those of us using third party glass lol

I do wonder where all this new technology will take photography. Dual Pixel Raw and what it can do is starting to look more like holography than photography. Are we moving into that direction? Or is that a very silly remark?

it's likely most groundbreaking technologies begin with a silly remark. :D

If we knew what Canon had up it's sleeves for the next 10 or 15 years, we would probably be blown away.

Hm... I'll wait for the rush to be over. Probably pick one up before the Holidays. Some features that I could see myself using. :D Looking forward to people's images and impressions in a week or so when they start landing.

I dont feel that canon has crippled the camera at all...Somewhere along the line they have to stop adding features. It would affect sales of their top range cameras if the mid range cameras had exactly the same features.
Canon seems to have produced a great camera in the 5D line with significant upgrades.
Stop moaning about what the camera doesnt have....If you want a better one buy the 1DXii... (but bear in mind canon decided to cripple the 1DXii by not adding a pop out cocktail bar, a built in hand warmer or a flippy lcd screen)

The 5D4 is what it is.....if you dont like it the simple option is not to buy it...

I think the gripe is, for example, that the D500 has been out for a while, has a UHS-II slot, and a 200 capacity raw buffer. Yet, in a $3500 body we have UHS-II and 21 shots. What's frustrating is that there's likely enough memory to do more, but it's a firmware limitation.

I'm less annoyed about the 4K crop because there are significant processing issues, so despite it being a pain I can understand why it works that way.

I'm a gearhead. Proud of it. The byproduct is I do have some really good photos. I'm not an awesome photographer, I still haven't really figured out photoshop. Use Lightroom. I'm color illiterate too. But... I have awesome memories of my kids and thats why I do what I do.

Sorry... I'm a measurebater at heart ;)

I'm with ya. I learned recently that I breakdown hobbies into at least two hobbies. The hobby itself and then the associated gear. Photographing is great, but I love the gear too. Some things just look like art in and of itself. Like the ring light flash, 70-200, 50mm 1.2 those things just look bad ass sitting on a shelf.

I'm a woodworker, I also like to restore old tools or obtain high-end tools. I'm a drummer. playing and building my kit are two separate hobbies.

Just me I guess, I really enjoy the gears, gadgets and equipment, However, admittedly, my retirement date will be pushed back a few years as a result.

I have decided to buy it when Adobe supports it in LR. I can't imagine that being far away, Adobe would be all over it like a cheap white suit.

I don't want to learn new software.

That's where all of my DPP knowledge was developed: that time between 5D3 release and Lightroom supporting :)

Canon 5D Mark IV Image Quality Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjRo7uTHolc (external link)

Thanks, watched it. The video itself is all right. Still, for real image comparisons, I go to DPreview's studio tool (this statement is more directed to the commenters under the video).
Comments, as usual, are getting ridiculous there. Is it just me or everybody else that gets upset every time I read such ignorant posts; so much "knowledge" without facts, so much negativity, so much "mine is better than yours" sentiment.

When comparing today's modern FF cameras, say D810, D750, 5DIV, K-1, A7RII, image quality is so close that other factors (MP, fps, ergonomics, AF, weather sealing, card slots, lens selections, etc.) are much more important than 1/3 stop of noise difference at ISO 25000. And with the improved DR of the mark IV, now even dynamic range differences are minor (except maybe in the case of the new D5 which is a low 12.3 EV, ironically). And I'm saying all that as a pixel peeper, analyzer sort of guy.

For example it cracks me up when people start bragging about the Sony A7RII and how much better it is than the 5DIV. It's a totally different camera! I have the 5D3 and the A7RII and there is very little overlap in terms of what I use them for. It's almost like saying that a big turbo diesel Dodge Ram runs circles around a Porsche 911 because it has more torque. Or my neighbor's 26 HP riding mower runs circles around my brother's 15 HP urban moped in Hungary just because it has more HP. All of them have engines that produce torque and horsepower, and that's pretty much where the similarities end. To me the difference between a 5D series and a Sony A7RII is similar.

I do like Tony Northrup and his videos, nothing against him, but all those viewers/posters drawing IQ conclusions from a compressed 1080p video is just insane. I spend hours staring at DPreview studio samples on my calibrated monitor to decide which camera handles noise better etc. And I bet many of these "expert" commenters viewed this video on their cell phones :)
