Coming from MkII, the high ISO samples look good to me. What do you think, how do they look compared to the MkIII?

£300 rental fee over two years... Not too shabby!

If Wex in the UK will honour their 5D3 trade in price once the 5D4 ships (I've preordered, and they say their quotes are valid for 30 days) then I should get about £450 less than I paid for it, about 3 years ago. I guess that'll take some the pain off the astronomical UK price for the 5D4.

Ok, with this new camera what is the better model for shooting BIF sports and aircraft shows?

The best camera body for this, hands-down, is the Canon 1D X Mark II.

If the 1D X II is out of your price range, I can pretty much guarantee that the 5D Mark IV will be an outstanding choice.

If focal length is a really big concern, then the 7D Mark II reigns supreme.

If you don't mind losing the FPS capability, but want outstanding crop-ability, the 5DsR has proven itself as a very good weapon for BIFs and sports.

We are in a great era with a lot of outstanding choices to choose from!

Cheers,
Bryan

Seeing as this was the main thing people were clamouring for, the relative silence about the DR is noticeable....

The DPReview hands-on mentions that Canon have been listening to people's request for more dynamic range at least twice in the article. Given the improvements seen on the 1Dx2 and the 80D I think we should be able to be cautiously optimistic in that area.

Not to mention it doesn't make sense to have 2 completely different sensor fabrication methods in production at this point, especially with a new 30.4 Mpx sensor. I would think at this point, they have either completely or have already started the process of eliminating the manufacturing of the old sensor design. They will simply continue their method of featuring certain things across different model lines, but use the new design at all levels.

That's what I thought! To be fair it was cosmetically perfect and the shutter count was only 38k. It pays to look after stuff, and was better than what Wex are offering trade-in.

Wex can be a little sneaky. Have they inspected the camera? Their quoted trade-in prices are based on the trade-in being near perfect, which most 5D3's are not. I bought my 5D3 from them about 2 years ago and a few months later I wanted to upgrade to a 1DX1, they offered me £900 for it on the basis it was still near-perfect, and it was 4 months old. I found them to be a little greedy and ended up just buying the 1DX, keeping my 5D3 on principle!

We can, I guess, be confident it's a new sensor; in that Canon don't have anything of that area and resolution in a previous body (as far as I'm aware).

I'm hopeful for more low iso DR (the 80D smokes a 5D3, despite the area disadvantage), and given the positive reports of trading resolution for noise on the 5Ds, maybe that will aid high iso images on the 5D4. Bodies since the 5D3 have greatly improved the noise character (i.e. it looks less objectionable, even if the absolute quantity is still high), so I'm expecting a decent step forward in image quality.

Yea, it did occur to me they might pull that trick, especially I assume that once you've paid to send the camera to them and would have to pay postage to get it back you are under a bit of pressure.

Some great photography gear coming this year.

I'm liking the idea of a 5d4 with 16-35 III, and keeping my 50, 135 and 100-400 for serious photography

also liking the look of the new Fuji Xt2 with the 23 for casual shooting.

Once I see some real world reviews this could be my future setup.

It reminds me of when someone thought it would be a good idea to send our company phones to be recycled for cash. I did what I thought was the right thing and left the screen protectors on, got FA for them as they said the screens were scratched. Obviously it was the protectors not the screens, but no going back once they're sent.

I'm surprised the kit pricing for things like the 24-105 isn't at SOME discount.. it's actually 1$ more than buying them separately. ;-)a

I noticed that too and surmised that Canon is trying to combat the price drop issue that happens when kits are split and then items sold separately. For example, the Canon USA retailers have had a very difficult time selling the 24-10L (Mark I) for $999 when there are so many other options to buy one for a couple of hundred dollars less from sellers that were splitting up the kit. Now, this won't be as much of an issue.

As for me, I sold my 24-105L today and I will most likely purchase the Mark II a few months from now once the grey market dealers split up some import kits. I suspect that I'll be able to buy a new one for $750-$800. Not right away, but eventually.

Cheers,
Bryan

There sure are a lot of great features in this new release! Of note for 1DX2 photographers, today Canon announced an upcoming major firmware release for the 1DX2. It does not add the new touchscreen features found in the 5D4, but it does add some of the new 5D4 features and a bunch of other features aimed towards the press photographer/sports shooter.

Again, what a great era for photography!

Cheers,
Bryan
