I'm planning a multi-stop US tour next year and was planning on visiting Bodie on one of the nights it's open. However, the night dates clash with other events of interest.
Are there any other towns comparable to Bodie that would be suitable for a night shoot ?

Steve

You could try Rhyolite, Nevada on the other side of Death Valley from Bodie.

Cerro Gordo is a good one, but it gets real cold at 8,200 feet. It's up in the hills east of a town called Keeler on the 136..(south of Lone Pine)

Where did you get the dates for 2017?

As far as Bodie, you might want to check out Jeff Sullivan's website at http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com …ht-photography-workshops/ (external link). He conducts workshops in Bodie as well as other areas.

The foundation uses the tours as a means of raising funds. It is possible to book a private tour. Check http://www.bodiefoundation.org/bodie-tours/ (external link).

There is also a collection of images (and other "tools") at http://www.ghosttowngallery.com …alifornia_ghost_towns.htm (external link). You can filter by state or use the interactive map.

There is also a German photographer who traveled for six weeks for the Smithsonian Magazine and published a great article, and later a book. Unfortunately the magazine article is difficult to access online but the photographer has a website and you can see photos in his book. The cover of his book by the way is from Bodine. http://www.bertholdsteinhilber.com/ghosttowns.html (external link). If you want to attempt to get the article electronically through a local library give http://connection.ebscohost.com …host-towns-by-night-light (external link) a try and see if you can access.

I wish I'd known about Cerro Gordo a few years back. We passed very close to there.

I'm guessing the dates for 2017 based on the observation that previous open nights have been on the Saturday preceding a new moon. That would make sense as the moon won't rise until the wee small hours.
The Jeff Sullivan thing is tempting. More time, less people and he knows the site.

Steve.

I don't see the logic relating to a new moon. The three dates with moonrise and moonset this year have been

June 25, 2016 Moonrise 11:56 PM Moonset 10:47 AM
July 30, 2016 Moonrise 5:17 PM Moonset 10:04 PM
August 27, 2016 Moonrise 1:41 AM Moonset 4:07 PM

The New moon for the same three months is June 4th, July 4th, August 2nd

The Full moon for the same three months is June 20th, July 19th, August 18th

Keep in mind the park is open until 10 PM on the special dates so only the July 30th date had any degree of moonlight with rise at 5:17 PM and set at 10:04 PM. Source for rise and set is at http://www.weatherforyou.com …on=6&syear=2016&submit=Go (external link)

I know when I have been there (multiple occasions) it took several repeat trips to catch an opportunity with moonlight.

I suggest you contact the Bodie Foundation and see if the 2017 dates have been established. Their email is info@BodieFoundation.org. You might also ask when tickets go on sale. It used to be March 1st and by the way they go fast.
