This was from a recent (and first) wedding I did several days ago. The couple requested a photo against the city skyline at night on a deck, and so I scrambled to come up with how to handle it. I am fairly comfortable using a flash but I didn't think it would turn out well if I tried using on camera flash to expose them against blackness, and I didn't want to experiment with the bride and groom. So I opted to go for a silhouette. Also by this point I was utterly exhausted and just wanted to go home lol. Thoughts on the editing and crop? I could crop closer and have them on the left. Also, for the next time I shoot a couple at night like this, how should I light it? I'm think the couple will probably like this and that's what matters, but it seems too dark to me.

I'm aware of the light saber sticking out of his neck.

Hmm, interesting concept 'tis. I had never seen it before, thanks for the idea, BTW. :p

If I were doing it, I'd probably extend the exposure to make the background just a wee bit lighter (not more than one stop, though); and hopefully, that would also add a bit of a 'halo' round the subjects.

I would never use a flash at the 180-x position for this. In any case, if I wanted to rim light them, I'd use a couple of flashes with soft-light diffusers (stripboxes) behind the subjects, outside the frame, and aimed at each other (not towards the subjects). Like so:

--------------- Background

<] [> Lights

* * Subjects
This would ad a bit of a soft rim whilst leaving them in shadow.

Of course, do go out and experiment and take notes before trying this live. ;)

Think about cloning out that colorful spiky thing that appears to be rising out of the groom's back. Unless it's some famous landmark that provides necessary context. In that eventuality, I would have thought about perhaps positioning them differently.

When I do silhouettes I like to have a little light hitting the face of the couple. At least the bride.
Just enough to make her (them) recognizable.
