Dear John,

Yes I formatted the card in camera several times to no avail. I do know that the in camera formatting works because the 4GB card that I was using and was able to read with my computer's internal card reader was originally formatted for Canon cameras and I switched it to Nikon with no problems.

I am truly a plug and play kind of a guy. For now at least, I have a way to use larger cards that works fine and I'll more than likely stick with it, for I don't like to troubleshoot things. ;-)a

Regards,

Tim Murphy :-)

One thing to try as a last resort, no harm possible, and only takes a few minutes.

1. Shut down the PC

2. Insert the problematic card

3. Reboot the PC

4. Check for the card.

Windows 7 Home (64 bit) did have some early on problems recognizing memory cards, but for the most part it was SD cards, but having said that there are more SD cards in the marketplace than CF these days.

Everyone,

I tried every suggestion. The only thing that works is the camera to computer via USB patch cord. Thankfully the end of a Canon USB cable is the same as the camera end of a Nikon USB cable as I did not receive any cables with the used D300 I purchased.

Tim Murphy :-)

Based on what you have verbalized I strongly suspect the USB drivers have been mangled.
Windows may report the latest driver is installed, but the underlying support is probably mangled.
If I can find the support link that bailed me out, I will post it. I am pretty sure it was a link on
a Microsoft or Samsung support site.

Regards,

110yd

Reputable sites like Microsoft or Samsung aren't too bad but be cautious with these sites that promise to scan your drivers and perform updates. They more often than not can do more harm than good. If you can't get a driver directly from a source, use caution.

In device manager, you can also right click any specific item and select "update driver".

Lastly, the OP hasn't told us what brand PC he is using so that we can be more specific with help. Dell for instance has a manner to connect to your PC and completely scan it for driver status, then you get to pick and chose what you might want to update. There is no interaction with a person, you totally do the "driving".

Dear John,

It's a Dell. Maybe I'll try contacting them when I get back home from work. In the meantime I have a way to read the card and if push comes to shove I'll continue using the USB patch cord.

Tim Murphy :-)

Go to the link http://www.dell.com …rticle/us/en/04/SLN128900 (external link) and follow the instructions. The tool is automated; it will ask you to connect to your PC and then check the versions of every driver installed, alerting you to those that need an update. You can pick and chose.

The USB drivers are only part of what it takes to get USB MASS Storage to work. Does the drive show up in "DISK MANAGEMENT"? It needs to show up and have a drive letter assigned.

There are Driver filters set up in the registry that determine the order. Before attempting any "FIX" make sure you back up the registry. Below is a link.

Tinkering with the registry is not a newbie task.

As someone else said, be careful downloading "Driver Check" software from sites.

Dear 110yd,

The "E" drive does not show up in disk management. The card is never recognized when it is plugged into the CF card slot in the internal card reader in the computer tower. When I go to disc management like was shown in the case of the missing SD card, it attempts to load but cycles and cycles until it times out. The "E" drive remains blank and unrecognized at all times. By blank I mean it does not show up as an available mass storage slot.

When the camera is plugged with the USB cable in it shows up in the "E" drive slot and everything on the card can be accessed with any program I choose to use.

Like I said it's workable as is, and there is no compelling need to keep fudging around with things until the computer is hard broke.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :-)
