I haven't seen many comparisons on these two on here.

From what I've read the 5d has:
-higher ISO
-more AF points
-larger sensor

The 80D seems to hold its ground when compared to the 5d III.

Is this true?? Can the new 80D produce results that are just as good. I don't expect it to perform as well in low light but it does have better dynamic range.

Thoughts?

Not a fair comparison: full frame vs. crop. Guess that's why you haven't seen many comparisons 'twixt them.

There are a lot of sites that offer up a pretty good comparison. Check out this (external link) one, or this (external link) one, or this (external link) one.

But I'm with the above poster, two different tools.

Its still a camera that captures images. One is better.....

Besides all the features described in the links above, one has a full frame sensor and the other a crop sensor.

Both do the same job but each has a subset of things it does better.

Well the 80D is like a flat head screwdriver while the 5D3 is like a bigger flat head screwdriver. Completely different tools. ;-)a

Can't compare the 80D and 5D3? Of course you can. You can compare anything to anything. Why, the other day I was comparing an 80D to a polish sausage. The sausage tasted a lot better.

So you are telling me if I give you two different pictures, one from the 80D and one from the 5dIII...you will be able to tell which is from which camera?

I think the OP wants comparisons so he/she doesn't have to buy one of each.

I don't buy IQ. I buy features. 6D for season AF in one-shot and excellent IQ. 1DIV for frame rate and servo.

I guess my biggest concern is image quality and dynamic range.

Dont really care for frame rate and both bodies offer more than enough AF points

I am planning to work with a lot of prints in the future and want to keep my next camera for a while.

Most sources say that the 5D3 has better IQ. Not sure why, since the resolutions are about the same and the 80D has better DR.

I think it's actually a very interesting comparison, FF of a previous generation versus a new generation crop.

I have both. They kind of complement each other as they each have unique strengths and weaknesses. Some of the major points that stand out to me are:

80D
-DPAF - This is awesome. Super accurate live view focus and AF during video
-Screen - Articulating touch screen. Great for shooting from awkward positions. Touch AF is pretty handy.
-Dynamic range - Better than 5D3 at low ISO. The 5D3 catches up by about ISO 320.
-1080 60P Video
-Wifi - Can be controlled remotely via phone or tablet
-Anti-flicker - Gives your more flexibility when shooting under fluorescent lighting

5D3
-Larger sensor - Get that sweet 35mm image look with wide/normal range primes
-Better high ISO IQ (in terms of both noise and DR)
-AF- 61 points vs 45, additional customization options, spot AF mode
-Ergonomics - The 8 way multi-controller and full size thumb wheel offer superior ergonimics imho
-Can record clean HDMI out
-Dual card slots - Versatility/reliability, particularly useful when shooting events

Overall, the 5D3 is my workhorse camera, and it is simply an outstanding tool that can handle nearly any job. The 80D is very versatile in it's own right and brings some exciting new technology that enables unique creative possibilities.

If I'm going to do a paid job, I almost always use the 5D3 as my main camera. If I'm going to shoot some photos of my 6 month old (not an unimportant task by any means), I'll often grab the lighter 80D and pair it with the 35IS. This makes for a very manageable package that allows me to experience the moment and not worry so much about my big heavy bag of gear.
