I have searched this forum and I came up with one old thread where one P.O.T.N. member had a problem and took his lens apart but the photos are no longer available. The problem I have that I just noticed last week when I was trying to manual focus this lens on my a7r. I was trying to dial in the focus peaking and I felt the focus sticking at different points and could not get it focused. Since than I have been trying it in both manual and af and it sticks and you can feel it getting stuck like something is rubbing at around 3mm. It works fine in both modes between 3mm and infinity and when you play with it and turn it fast it will go down to 1.2 and again work fine in both modes between 1.2 and 3mm. I am not interested in taking this apart, I took apart a broken Canon point and shoot apart one time and the electronics were way to fragile for my skills, total disaster. I am interested if anyone has had this problem and possible costs to repair. Anywhere around Chicago area to take it into other than sending it into Canon. af motor works fine but stops due to some mechanical part/parts rubbing.

Thanks,

Rob

Sounds to me like the focus mechanism is going. Kind of common issue in the 70-200 f4L. I had the same thing happen to me with my IS version. The ring will move but the focuse doesn't. It got to the point where the focus distance would change if the lens was pointed up or down, but would not move at all when level to the ground.

If I remember correctly it ended up costing about $300 to get fixed. I took mine to Midwest camera repair as they are just a few minutes from me and a canon service center. But I'm in Michigan so no clue where to get it fixed in Chicago.

Thanks for your reply gremlin75, I was hoping it would be about $150.00. I think I only paid about $475.00 for it slightly used 8 years ago from a p.o.t.n. member. Maybe I will keep using it as is for a bit.

Just a dump question - 1.2 and 3 m make me think of the focus limiter - could that be interfering?

KlausM, thanks for responding but it sticks at about the 3mm area and when you get past the sticking point by twisting the focus ring very fast several times you can feel it hit the focus limiter on each end at 1.2 and at a little beyond infinity on the far end. For now I am using it as is; however, I have missed some shots due to not being able to get it past the sticking point when having to zoom and change focus for a closer subject.
