In the 18th century, Walmer became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and was gradually modified from a military fortification into a private residence.

The gun battery overlooking the English Channel. Welcome to Great Britain 1500s-1800s style.

Dubrovnik is on my To Do list. I hoped to make it there this year, as a side trip tagged onto a trip to Italy, but it didn't work out.

Having said that, we're starting to wonder if we want to visit Europe again, because during the last few trips (Spain, Italy, Switzerland & Austria), we have seen an astounding increase in tourist numbers, even in places once considered to be 'off the tourist trail'. For instance, we recently visited Sorrento, Capri & the Amalfi Coast in 'shoulder season' and found the crowds horrendous. God knows what Summer must be like!

How did you find Dubrovnik? I know it's very popular.

I was there last September, also shoulder season. It has become popular and crowded, but there are still quiet parts of the city. I was lucky- only 1 ship there. It could have been like the photograph in this link-

I suppose it depends on the places in Europe, I travel there sometimes for work and those places are naturally less crowded.
