In the first picture the eyes, nose, and lips are in perfect focus. This draws the attention to central part of the face where you want it. The only other well focused point in the picture is the arm in the left lower corner. It this picture the arm really isn’t a focal point. Perhaps a little Gaussian blur to the left lower corner or a little tighter crop to remove the second focus point. Alternatively, just leave it alone. I do like this picture.

Mar 12, 2006 13:05 | #3 Again, very nice lighting. I find the white area behind the young man in the first image distracting because it fights the eye for attention. Five seconds spent tugging the wrinkles out of his T shirt on his right arm would have been a well spent five seconds. In the second image one of the many rules in portraiture states that if the hands are visible they should be in focus.
