Pectoral Sandpiper, a first for me

Wilson's Phalarope, non-breeding colors, someone needs to talk to the taxonomists who put these guys into this group. Or maybe the folks who come up with the common names. Normally these birds are found swimming.

Nice, John! The pectoral was a lifer for me as well just a few weeks ago. Saw it for just the second time this morning, along with another lifer, the solitary sandpiper.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Thanks Sam. Congrats on the lifers. I got a Solitary last year. Neat bird.

Both are great shots, John, but I particularly like the first one.

All I want is just a little more than I'll ever have.

There will be days when you get the shot(s) you missed days, months or years before.

Both are great shots, John; well done. I was just reading about phalaropes, as I had the chance to photograph six migrant Red-throated Phalaropes. They are uncommon here, more so than Wilson's. Anyway, what I learned is that the other two species do, almost always, feed while swimming, but that the Wilson's will, in addition, feed while wading as your photo shows.

Thanks Al, I have not seen any Red-throated feed standing. I have not seen the other species at all as it is quite rare here. Interesting information.

For someone who lives in the "desert"(yes, still hanging on to that stereotype), you seem to see more shorebirds than we coastal folks! And we're better off for it-great photos, as always, John.

Thanks Rog.

I am blessed to be on the Pacific Inland Flyway. Plus we have a surprising amount of lakes for stop overs.
