I saw that the older mac pros were upgradable but the newer ones not so much for internal upgrades.

I really like the Mac OS and hate Microsoft. Is it possible to build a Mac from scratch using a standard tower case? I want something that I'll be able to use for five or more years then be able to upgrade hopefully then the CPU and or my plus other things as technology gets better like a PC but not have to worry about the OS creating problems with every update.

If this is possible where and what me and CPU to get plus the video card and network card HD,SSD, and memory are easy but the core components are what need to be Macos specific to work without a hitch. I'm not talking about building a PC and hackintoshing it. All apples run Windows usually but not all PCs will work with Mac OS I want to build a machine that will run Mac OS now and into the future plus dual boot Windows.

It is most often referred to a a "Hackintosh"

Mac's run on the same Intel stuff as Dell or HP these days. So yes!

It is definitely possible, As was posted above, the buyers guides help to know what parts you can and cannot use. But it will have drawbacks. For instance not being able to upgrade to new releases until it's been tested and verified to still work is a big one for most people.

When it really boils down past the subjective "which OS is better argument" or "Apple is crappy for their practices" statements, this question is really what is at the heart of it all. Apple fixes their hardware to being non-upgradeable, aside from a HDD or RAM in most instances, where in one side you have people who are ok with it being locked down because by the time you upgrade you'd need a new motherboard for the new CPU anyways then RAM so usually it would prompt a whole new build regardless of parting in options while the other side says they don't care if that is the mentality or not, they want the modularity of their own purchased systems.

But as you stated then CDS said, you'd have to Hackintosh route.

Agreed. The Hackintosh route is not the smooth-sailing Apple experience people are accustomed to. You need to be good at researching the dark corners of the Internet and be comfortable with Terminal. A Hackintosh is more of a hobby than a tool.

The 2010 and 2012 Mac Pros are still excellent machines! Really excellent actually. You can get a very decent one with significant upgrades on eBay. I'm happy to help you sort through things if you want to entertain that route. I'm one of those fortunate workers whose employer wants us to be on the latest, greatest, and biggest MacBook Pro. I live, eat, and breathe Apple in order to make a paycheck and by choice. With that said, my favorite Mac is my old 2010 Mac Pro that I bought for myself about 2 years ago.

I am having trouble understanding this part of the sentence you wrote. . I would like to have a better understanding of what you were asking. . If you were able to clarify what you meant, it would be helpful.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

If you build your own you will also get a much much faster computer for the same price you would have to pay for a Mac.
There are several videos on Youtube comparing either similarly priced PC to a Mac or a Pc that cost a lot less and every single time the PC wins...

The OP already said he wants the OSX operating system over Windows. Turning this thread into a PC vs. Mac battle is just going to send it into the 30+ year abyss of stupid debates. Some people have plenty of money ;)

whoa, burnsauce. lol

as one who doesn't have plenty of money , i use my macs until they disintegrate. I am also quite capable of tearing them apart and putting them back together again.

I am really disappointed with Tim Cook's decision to make them so impossible to upgrade or repair. He is treating them like throwaway bottle caps.

all of the above makes me more likely to buy my first used mac next time I need a computer.

You can not build a Mac from scratch using standard PC parts, you can build a Hackintosh. It's known as a Hackintosh because there are certain "hacks" that need to be made to get OSX running. If you do not want a Hackintosh you have to buy from Apple. It can be time consuming to get it setup, it can be time consuming to debug when things go wrong, updates/upgrades can lead to starting over. Some people have great success, others fail and give up.

I have played around with Hackintosh's several times. I would never rely on one for everyday use in a professional setting, ie. used for editing on paid jobs, without a capable backup system ready to use at a seconds notice.

Unfortunately the savings you get from a dated machine isn't really worth the discount without doing some researching. I will never get how someone will buy a Mac for $1500 and when the Mac 2.0 releases with 50% speed increase the very next yr, that same person puts the Mac1.0 for sale at $1400 and manage to sell it. (Exaggerated but still)

Macs definitely hold their value well.

Few things are as easy as opening a box and plugging it in.

You need to be good at researching the dark corners of the Internet and be comfortable with Terminal.

It's actually quite easy and there's no need for "researching the dark corners of the Internet" to get going. And there is no need for using the terminal app, either.

A Hackintosh is more of a hobby than a tool.

I've been using one as a "tool" for many years. And my most recent has been the easiest of all.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I guess I'll take the help to find a good used Mac Pro and do what it needs to make it last as long as I can. My only experience with Macos was on a Mac mini until a upgrade killed it. The fan died after the upgrade while the unit was on and I didn't know it. So I guess the CPU over heated and died I tried replacing the fan to no avail.

I hate Windows OS I've refused to upgrade past 7 so Mac OS was much more stable than the best Windows machine I ever owned I was late to the PC thread it wasn't until the early 90s that I got a PC before that it was C=. For ten years. And Macos is closer to it than PC.

I was hoping someone made a mb and CPU that would fit in a standard tower case and you could buy the best parts availabile to build a better Mac. But I guess what I thought was available was being hackingtoshed into a system. I was going to go that route originally but then saw every update becomes a problem. And the fact that Mac systems are being made to be disposable instead of upgraded is bad news for the company in my opinion.

I guess they are wanting the constant income from the power users and the plug and play users.
