Not the most compelling photos. Went hiking with a friend today at Quartz Mountain State Park in Oklahoma. We were out there around 2 - 3 pm, so lighting wasn't the greatest.

This is some old looking building at the start of a trail.

Shot some sparring in JPEG as an experiment. Indoors.

I will not be doing that again. While the images looked fine, it has been so long, I didn't realise how much my own preferences for PPing images has evolved.

Does the JPEG engine in the camera use noise reduction for higher ISO stuff? I think that is the main thing I am seeing that I do not like.

I have stopped using NR pretty much.

My 7D2 has high ISO NR turned on by default. It can be disabled. I would imagine the 5D4 has similar settings.

Thanks Rod.

I'll just stick to Raw. It's useful especially when you get a couple of really good sports shot that need a bit of extra work.

I have been playing with learning portrait work. So far its trial and error but some classes are coming very soon. Wife doesn't like to sit for this sort of stuff so the puppy was roped into it. I also wish I had a different background color. Hopefully get a grey or white one this week.

The camera was set on a chair so it wasn't motion blur. So this is my next question, when you up your shutter speed, are you upping the ISO for compensation?

If the camera was simply sitting the chair that does not mean there is no vibration. A sturdy tripod and head is best for testing. Or a good bean bag on the chair. Do not underestimate that shutter movement, even in one shot or silent mode. :)

As I mainly take wildlife I basically always use ISO priority mode ;) Which is basically Manual with Auto ISO. That way I know I have the right SS and aperture just let the ISO equalize things out. I have Auto ISO set to within my personal limits (100-10k). Shots at 10K may or may not be use able for stock agencies (down sampling and some careful PP often gets past quality control at the agencies) but obviously I prefer ISO100-3200, the 5D4 file are very clean considering the crop/resizing possibilities you have.

Shooting with my 500mm the lowest I go is 1/250 shutter speed, this requires good technique though and always on a tripod and Uniqball.
