This is a great photograph ... but it also set me thinking. The truth is that through my own eyes I would never (not even when I was much younger) see red 5 or blue 8 anything like as sharply as I can in this image.

It's almost too perfect. Through precision it has lost the sense of motion ... of something happening.

Apologies for venturing a criticism ... because I really, really like your photography. I think it is amongst the very best we see on POTN ... technically and humanly.

Thank you for your very insightful comment. I'm new to team sports photography and am on a steep learning curve. I'm finding the balance between sharpness and sense of movement a difficult compromise and am trying to convey action along with an acceptably sharp photo. The ball and the camans (sticks) are frequently blurred at 1/1000 second but not in this photo. I think panning at lower SS would achieve what you would like to see and I may try that soon but first I have to be able to catch the important and quirky moments without thinking about it. To use a metaphor from "the Karate Kid", I'm still scrubbing the decks

And I really appreciate your comment about my photography in general. Thank you.

While shooting a beautiful sunrise this morning, my Mark IV stopped working. I changed filters, pressed the shutter button on nothing happened.

Since then, I have changed the battery to a freshly charged one, removed and reinstalled the lens, removed and changed the memory card. It won't power on. The batteries, lenses and memory cards work fine on my Mark III.

Has anyone come across this issue?

Looks like it will have to go back to Canon, but I'm traveling for another week. Luckily, I had the Mark III with me as backup.

My 7Dii did the same thing when I first got it. Canon said it had a bad circuit board and repaired it fairly quickly. I am hoping this one behaves itself. I have never had a problem with my 6D.

Thanks, Ed. The body is only two months old and has less than 800 click :(

Naturally, I Googled the problem, not much on it but a thread on DPReview indicated others had experienced the same thing and that I was likely the power control board. Of course, not happy about this happening to such a new and fairly expensive camera.

Doesn't appear limited to the 5D4, at least in my experience......the symptoms you describe match what happened to me with the 7Dii exactly. Dead as a paperweight. Was working one minute and not the next. Good luck.

It was -30 celcius 3 weeks ago. One day -44 with wind chill. It was +9 on Friday. I drove my snowmobile wearing my shorts to another lake to go ice fishing. Today it is raining. This is the first time I have seen mist like this in February in 30 years.

Another nice sharp test image from my initial outings with the 5D4.

That's why there is a warranty I guess. I am philosophical about electronics failures on any device....they happen from time to time.

Good thing is ( kinda good ) that is a cut and dry problem to fix, not some annoying hard to replicate intermittent issue. the question is how quickly they do it.

This is about an 80% crop taken with a Canon 100-400ii plus the Canon 1.4 TC.

Pretty sharp. A great blue heron coughing up a fish in the nest

hmm been noticing something, not sure if any of you guys can test it out and tell me if you guys have the same problem

basically i've noticed in a high contrast scene (eg sunrise/set) if i did a long exposure (like today i did with 10 stop ND and exposure time of 2 mins) i've noticed when i bring the shadows back (3-4 stops) i see a lot of what seems like (mostly) red hot spots...

granted we've been a bit warm here in australia but i am shooting at iso 100 and 2 mins don't seem THAT long and that it's only happening in the deep shadow area as opposed to the entire frame -?

Just amazing!

What kind of a Mic are you using?

I picked up a rode svmp, but have yet to get anywhere that quiet to shoot that kind of quality.

Perhaps the extra 8 megapixels are showing more resolution. I like it for that so I can crop more and

1. I get all 61 AF points with my 100-400 II and 1.4 III. I love to use all the AF configs and Case numbers when I shoot and I not yet convinced Cases 5 and 6 do much for me unless I am using one of the zone AF modes. I'll be using that combo a lot more now. 560mm is a good compromise between a 500 and 600L. As you can see from some of my posts the IQ is good with extreme crops even with the TC.

2. The focus is very snappy even with the TC. When I was testing on the birds on the shots I was taking I was impressed. Can hardly wait to try BIF. Bad time of year around here for that.

3. Case number parameters have more steps for fine tuning. Identical to the 1DX II.

4. The 5D4 has a separate AF area selection button just beside the multi-controller button. The 7D2 had it as part of the multi-controller button so as CyberDyne said there was some "nubbin" going on but I'm getting used to it. If Canon had offered it as a retro for my 5D3 I would have paid to have it installed. I paid to have Canon install a locking mode dial retro on my 7D.

5. I did not really consider it but the touch screen is pretty amazing. I can whip through the menus. I barely use the green my menu's now. When I pick up my 7D2 I find myself tapping the screen.

6. When you press the Q button you get the Q screen. Press info and a second Q screen comes up that shows all the AF points, ISO etc and you can program more things you want to see when you open that screen.

7. I have been shooting at 32,000 ISO and getting good results.

8. The 5D4 offers the Detail Set when you are programming the AF-ON and * buttons.

Same here!

First time taking it out, and it was immediately snappier with the 1.4xIII+100-400 II F8 combo. My MKIII has 110k on the shutter, so it was time.

I'm pretty sure a number of others ran into this a while ago too.

hey man thanks for the heads up

i did a test last night same shot underexposed 4 stops 2 min shot in a rooms before and after turning on aircon...it showed noticeably less with aircon on so maybe it is just the heat i dunno

do you remember where the discussion was and did they come to conclusion as to whether just nature of sensor or was it issue specific to individuals?

I just went back to look at the files I shot with the 5DIV in November...I shot a variety of long exposure durations, as testing...and on all of them when the exposure was pushed 2 stops or more in post, the red noise showed up...it was pretty disappointing...and was just one of the reasons I opted to not buy one...I don't think yours is an anomaly...
