I get it. However cars like the GN and other hot rods were built for using. If it was me I'd of bought two... one for go and one for show. The one for go would have 200k+ miles :) Much more enjoyable.

That's a good philosophy, too! In 1987, at age 33, it was all I could do to afford 1! By 2005, we did have more income; thus the 'Vette. I did have other drivers along the way. A Pontiac LeMans (aka GTO), a Mustang, a Chevelle. But, for some reason, I wanted to save the GN. I'm glad I did.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

That's a good and fair question. When I go to car shows, the cars I enjoy the most are the ones that are still in (or restored to) factory condition. I especially appreciate the ones that are truly original. They are pretty rare. I did drive the GN several thousand miles the first year that I had it. But I couldn't stand the wear and tear; I really wanted to keep it original. Also, I consider cars to be a form of art. If someone buys a Peter Lik photograph, it doesn't do anything. It's appreciated just by looking at it. I see cars in the same way. One of my favorite cars at a car show was a Ford Model T that was a "barn find" but was all original. It was in terrible shape, but you could still admire the original upholstery, dash, engine compartment, etc. The details that were done by the factory workers almost 100 years ago were still there to see and appreciate. I loved imagining myself on the assembly line. The owner has no intention of restoring it. He wants to preserve those original details, and I'm glad he's doing that. Sorry to get a little wordy and nostalgic. But the truth is that I get more pleasure by owning, seeing, and preserving the Grand National than I do from driving it.

On the other side of the coin, my wife and I owned a 2005 Corvette for a while. That was a car to DRIVE! Amazing performance and handling, but not very handy for photography. My current driver (a 10 year old Chevy truck) takes my wife and I and our dog on our photo outings.

Thanks for asking the question. It gave me the chance to reminisce and reflect on some things I hadn't thought about for a while.

Regards, Jim

P.S. Best wishes for successful cancer surgery.

Restored to original are great but I also really appreciate the ones that are still in factory condition. All summer, every Sunday cars and owners gather around a restaurant about 6 blocks from where I live and you run across a few originals that are in good shape.

Have you tried the 400 DO II? I have seen some very sharp images with the 2X. Lighter than the 500. I wanted the 500 for years but now I intrigued by the 400 DO. I may rent one this summer.

I'm intrigued by the 500 II vs 400 DO II. Going to start my own thread on it, drop by and discuss :)

I got to use the 400 DO (also borrowed) the same day. With my 1.4TC. Great results also. My only issue was that I found it really awkward due to its shape and had great diffuclty raising it up to my eye and finding the subject. I do not have this problem with my 100-400ii nor did I have it with the 500 once I got used to it. PRobably I would get used to the 400DO, MedicineMan uses his with GREAT results and it is his favorite lens. I just found it really strange to use. It is a fine lens.

Here is one from the same afternoon taken with the 400DO plus Canon 1.4TC (latest model). I have several better examples but they don't fit on this thread as they were shot with a 7Dii-I only took two photos with the 5DIV and 400DO plus TC combo. I tried both lenses with both bodies, with and without the TC, to get a real feel for them in a real life shoot situation. Which was a boat at a wading bird rookery. A real test.

If you want me to post the two 7Dii flickr shots let me know, I don't want to spam the thread.

That is crisp. I checked CPS Canada and they have both the DO and 2X III for rent.

With the record snowpack in the mountains, Shoshone Falls ("the Niagara of the West") is putting on quite a show. Difficult conditions-- like standing in a windy rainstorm (cost us an umbrella and a cap!)
Best appreciated with a video (external link).
