If I mention a crop, I usually say something like "this is 25% of the original image."
For our purposes that might be the best way to describe how much an image is "cropped".

Wow.

Following this logic, a 100 percent crop should mean 100 percent thrown away! Now I am even more confused... 100% crop is supposed to be short for "here is a crop of the full image that shows 100% pixel per dot (image pixel to monitor dot) resolution" GEAR LIST

In the printing, graphic design and photography industries, cropping[1] is the removal of unwanted areas from a photographic or illustrated image. So it appears if you crop 100% then there will be nothing left. If you crop 90% then only 10% is left to view.

Lbsimon ...never exercised in my life More info | Aug 06, 2017 09:55 | #3370 CyberDyneSystems wrote in post #18420484 This may be true in reference to the article you posted but it is never what is being discussed on photography forums when the term 100% crop is used. I agree with your reasoning with regarding the "100 percent crop". However, when I read something like "70 percent crop", I want to know how much was cut off of the original frame. It is important to me. When I go our shooting bird, and then have to crop some part of the frame, I am interested to see how much it compares to other shooters, how close they can come to a bird, and how lucky they (or me, for that matter) are.

The "%" would bare no relation to the original images size,. it would only be a reference to the final display screens dot pitch. But I don't think anyone used 50 or 70% to mean in relation to final display dot pitch, ... If we crop small enough (800 pixels across for example) on almost anyone's screen today it will display @ 100%, pixel per dot, as it won't need to be reduced to fit. In my mind and I might be wrong but in reference to 2400x1600 on a 1600x800 screen then the full frame is mapped to available screen size. If you zoom in to pixel by pixel pitch or actual size then you are looking at some portion of the full shot but it is 1600x800 in size. No different than your FOV at 50mm fl and 100mm fl. if nothing moves then you capture/view an image that is a smaller portion of the scene. >>> Pictures? What pictures? <<<<
