really like the rays of sun coming down on this shot. curious. was this shot altered a lot from the original? wondering if you tried to expose for the highlights then brought the shadow up in post. trying to see if the DR of the 5d4 could get a shot like this without clipping the highlights, which looks like happened to this shot. thanks.

Thanks. It wasn't altered all that much, just a bit of this and that in Lightroom to make it pop a little more. I didn't try an HDR shot there because there just didn't seem to be that much dynamic range to deal with in the scene. Here it is SOOC:

White-Breasted Nuthatch at the cottage with the 5D IV, 500 f4 II, handheld, ISO 1600. Light wasn't great, but that's what I bought the camera for...to step in for my 7D II on those cloudy days.

Seems like that 500mm II is a popular bird lens.

It is a good compromise between size and reach. It also pairs extremely well with Canon's MKIII extenders.
It truly shines on the 5DIV. :-)

Agree. I can actually handhold it when needed, but I prefer a tripod or beanbag.

I'm really enjoying the 5D IV paired with it for bird photography. 7 FPS isn't blazing, but just enough to get multiple shots so you can pick the best one. This Golden-Crowned Kinglet is an example...super jittery bird, and hardly bigger than a hummingbird. I liked this shot in particular, as the bird is in the shade, but background in the sun.
