I often go out shooting wildlife/BIF with both but I don’t agonize over results very much so consider my comments anecdotal. The 7D2 is great and offers very good and reliable AF which is why it is used by so many wildlife and sports shooters. Nonetheless the AF on the 5D4 is better at acquisition, tracking and accuracy. The gap widens at f/8 max aperture and low light shooting. Sometimes not taking a photograph can be as problematic as taking one. - Alex Webb

While discussion in this thread has not been about the new lenses, it's interesting to hear some of the factors that relate to AF speed. Interviewer: I see, it seems that you’ve achieved high-speed AF. Nagao: AF speed involves both the fastest focus motor drive speed capable on the lens, and the focusing calculation time on the camera. In bright situations, the focus drive speed of the lens is dominant, and I believe this is why you can see AF speed improvements on the III series 400mm and 600mm super-tele lenses. Interviewer: What was the key technology for improving AF performance? Ichinose (Electrical Design): A major point was including the latest microprocessor for improved calculation speed, which also raised the AF control frequency. Although it differs depending on various conditions, this resulted in improved subject tracking during AI servo AF. More microprocessor cores result in smoother parallel processing. For example, AF performance can be maximized even when the IS mechanism is on. The power management function has been modified for real-time, accurate detection of power used by AF to draw out the maximum performance of the ultrasonic motor (USM). Strictly speaking, this relies on the AF performance of the camera body. However, both the EOS-1D and EOS 5D series benefit from improved AF performance when used with the III series lenses. http://downloads.canon.com …iew__CUSA__11-26-2018.pdf Awesome stuff, sadly I can not get that link to function in any way at all. I can't really say that the 5D4 is noticeably a lot faster, but I do get a better keeper rate, and it does offer the advantages I mentioned earlier that only the 5D4 and 1Dx2 can manage. 7D2 is no slouch, and I get very good results with it too. I often shoot go fast boats with both bodies. The 70-300L on the 7D2 and the 70-200L 2.8 II on the 5D4. Both lock focus quickly and track nicely. The faster shooting rate of the 7D2 is a benefit. I'd say the keeper rate is equal with both from my experience. I'm shooting from a pontoon boat while the go fasts go by at 60 to 90 mph, sometimes so close I can feel the spray
