I don't know if this is the correct thread to talk about this and ask for help...

Yesterday i received the Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens. I also have the old version the Sigma 150-500, i'm trying to sell it.

I started to test the new version and almost immediately realize that OS wasn't so effective like the OS in the old version.

So i put one lens on the camera take some shots at 500mm, change the lens and take more shots. I would say that in the contemporary version there's no difference between OS On and OS off...

Right now the OS switch is set on "1" (normal model) and Custom switch is set on "off".

Any advice?

Update:

I've contacted Sigma support, i've told them that i've compared both lenses on the same body (Canon 70D), and it looks like to me, the OS on the new lens wasn't working. They answered me:

"Unlike older models, it’s impossible to see any movement with this new generation of the stabilizer. You’ll need to shoot a subject at a very slow shutter speed ( 1/100s or 1/50s) with and without the stabilizer turned on and compare the results."

Does anybody knows why "Unlike older models, it’s impossible to see any movement with this new generation of the stabilizer" ?
I would like to know more about this new generation of OS.

When you say there is no difference between OS on and OS off, do you mean in image quality or what you see in the viewfinder?

When I first got my Sigma 150-600 Contemporary I thought it was not working because I saw little difference in the viewfinder or in vibration when activating the OS compared to the older Canon lenses I was used to. The Sigma has little change in the viewfinder. The most visible sign I see is when I try to keep the focus point on my subject before activating the OS and it appears jittery, but when I activate the focus and OS the focus point steadies on target.

I have never used the Sigma 150-500 so cannot offer a comparison. You may get more replies in the Lens forum of the Camera, Lens, and Accessories section.

if you put the camera in live view, and 10X zoom can you see the OS start to stabilize the image?

I have to say that my 150-600 C doesn't have that pronounced "snap and freeze" effect that you get with the Canon 100-400 L I, which is the only other lens with IS/OS/VC that I have much experience with, when looking through the VF. What I can say is that it certainly seems to be effective when looking at the photos. Although I also started using a shoulder stock type support again at the same time as getting the Sigma, I have plenty of panning images of aircraft shot at 1/160s & 600mm, that I then needed to crop by another 1.5× while shooting on my 50D, that is an equivalent FoV of a 900mm lens.

Do you have the dock?

From the factory the OS appears silky smooth through the viewfinder. If you change OS mode to dynamic using the dock you will see it operate much more abruptly.

Gungnir may be correct - when I first tried mine, it didn't seem like the OS was doing much. I have the dock and there was setting to make the OS more visible in the view finder. After making that change, it works as I expected.

I mean what i see in the viewfinder. With the old version lens, when the AF starts (as you say) the OS start to work. But in this new version, the image on the viewfinder appear jittery .... That's whats makes me think the OS wasn't working ...

I'll try to move this post to the thread you mention.

Thanks for replying!

As i was saying, yesterday was so rainy, was hard to make some tests.
But, i've noted what you mention. When the AF starts nothing changes on the viewfinder, however, when i look at the photos OS seems to make his job. This is a completly new lens behaviour to me, i have other stabilized lens and what i expected is "as soon as AF starts OS starts too". I don't know, i'm confused ...
