I tried making a homemade grid for my flash and it gave me a better understanding of lighting, I learned that I was over flooding my photos with light from my 47 inch softbox umbrella, not to the point of washing the photo out but to the point the contrast between lights and shadows were not there.
I made a grid out of coragated sign board material and the spot light effect lit the subject plus added the fall off effect of blending until it went to total dark, has me seeing light in a different way, from now on I'm going to make strip light soft boxes, more grids, and miniature soft boxes.
Now I know what they mean when they say, less is more.
