Which Nikon

I am going to purchase a Nikon to do some sports shooting and wildlife photography. For you sports shooters what would be a good camera for a non pro shooter? I have been checking out the D7200 and the D750. I used to shoot Nikon in the days of film but have been using Canon since I started digital several years ago. Thanks in advance.

I shoot a D750, and even though my main gig is portraits, I do some "non-pro" sports and wildlife as well.

For sports, I find the D750 is a great camera for the non-pro. Frame rate is not 11/second, but it shoots fast enough for me and did not cost $6k. You could get a used D3(S), but then you're down to 12MP vs 24MP. Megapixels really aren't a huge deal with me, but when you capture a perfectly clear shot of say a deer, it's nice to be able to crop tighter in post and still maintain that clarity. 12MP may still be sufficient, but 24MP sure can't hurt. And speaking of wildlife photography, the AF of the D750 is excellent. Ive shot the D90, D610 and D750. The D90 is good. The D610 is better, and in my opinion about equal to the D750 until conditions get really dark. That's where the D750 takes over. The D7200 AF might be just as good, but I find often my better opportunities for wildlife come at low-light times of day, especially after the sun has gone down. For that you may have to shoot at higher ISOs, and I have to think the full frame sensor would be better than the cropped sensor.

All good points. Consider also a D500. From what I've read it's essentially a DX version of the D5. For similar money you could also look at a used D4

Thanks that really helps. I know it is going to take a while to learn the menus on the Nikon but I can get a head start by reading up online.

If you are looking at the D750 a D500 body is roughly similar cost and would be far and away a better choice for sports. I have used the D750 for sports and it gets the job done well but the lower buffer and FPS can hurt if you HAVE to get the critical shot, unless you are a pro at the process. I am an amateur but if I had the cash I would pony up for the D500, I only purchased my D7200 because I was able to get a brand new body at half the cost of a second D750 body.

Thanks for your input and all the others that responded. I am holding off until the spring just in case Canon comes through with something. Right now I am torn between full frame or crop Nikon and which route I want to go. I have looked at both the 500 and the 7200. Also the 750 and 810 for landscape.

Nikon d500 definitely!

I got a mint condition D7100 because it - Was Cheap, low shutter count and is recognised by my LR5.
