A good question..

first of all think at nature there is only one light - the sun...
Try out for the first time to work with one light only.
front -back -side light..
try Tabletop photos..
then try it with a reflector...
white or colored paper, steropur what ever..
Laiter if you think you understand the basic - try it with a second light - to light up the shadows..
And on the end try it with a third light to bring some effects...
Its experience...

Try it, step by step

Good luck
and regards from Tenerife

Your local public library should have a good collection of photography books, including ones on studio lighting.

If you have the time or inclination, assisting a local pro is another option.

Cheers,
