I have 2 5d MK II, all L lenses. I'm also using a Sony A6000 that is designated for video (I shoot short interviews and some footage of events) My question is: What would be my best option for a single camera to have the features and quality of the 5d and yet give me an easy video capibility and have the option for an external mic.

Please offer some suggestions, Thank you

Canon R6, 2 Canon 5D Mk II; Sony A6000; 16-35 LF2.8; 24-70 F2.8 L; 24-105 F4 IS L; 70-200 F4 IS L; 28-135 F3.5; 50 F1.4; RF 24-105 F4 IS L, and 580 EX11

Anyone have any ideas, I had a camera store tell me to get a Sony 7R2 and use my canon lenses over the MKIII. What do you guys think?

Um...well..my answer would be the Canon 5D mark 2 - and I see you have two of them already.

There are other Canon DSLRs that are MUCH better at video than the 5D2. For example, any DPAF capable camera would be better. STM lenses are useful too as they are nearly silent in focusing.

I think that raises a really good question or points out what a really good question the OP has raised.

I suspect that some Rebels and certainly the 70D, 80D, maybe the 7D (certainly the 7D2) may provide better video capabilities in certain situations for certain users.

In my case, I have owned or used most of the rebels from the Xti forward, used the video capabilities from the T1i forward, the 60D and 70D, the 6D and the 5D 2 and 3. I have had limited use of the 7D.

I will say I have been most pleased with the video on the 5D3. Second choice (and here's where you disagree for sure) without a doubt has been the 5D2 and third choice has been the 6D. I have read wonderful things about the 80D's video as well as that of the 7D2. So they are likely better (as to video) than the 5D2.

But that's not the question the OP presented. He wants the features and the quality of the 5D as well. That means photos. And he wants "easy video capability" and the option for an external mic. How does the 5D2 (that he already owns a pair of) not answer his prayers - assuming he either cannot afford or does not want to afford the 5D3 or 5D4?

I think the only answer to your question is the 5D Mark IV. It certainly has the "features and quality of the 5d," and folks are already raving about its video capabilities (including 4K). It does have an external mic jack.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Thank you all for the comments, I am leaning toward the MKIV at this point.

That is probably the best bet, you get all the still advances, but also DPAF on a FF that can shoot 1080 as well as cropped 4K.

Agreed - if you can afford it. But the 5D2 would get the job done as well. I'm not sure what the Sony really added to the video capability over the 5D2.

I am not sure either, as I try not to follow Sony.

DPAF is a game changer with Canon video though. With something like 80% of the sensor being able to focus anywhere, and then adding STM lenses so that focusing is deadly quick and silent, almost as fast as the L USM drive speeds, video can be done easier than ever.

I am aware of the 5D2 video, and how they filmed a portion of House and other TV shows with that model, but the 5D4 will kill the 5D2 in ease of video/AF, IMO. Also with much improved ISO, video in low light will be better as well. You also get full control of audio volumes not found in the 5D2 (unless a firmware update allowed it). Finally 60fps vs 30fps allows for a bit more fluidity in the video.

That being said, if DoctorH would like to see what the 5D2 can do, these articles may help.

Very well said, TeamSpeed. You get what you pay for. The Mark IV appears to be a winner big time on video and stills.
