Hello,

I had the AF point to be displayed turned on when i play back my pictures. I recall seeing it a while back but have not really noticed it lately. I have sense upgraded the firmware on the camera. Today i wanted to see the AF points on my pictures during playback but they are not showing up. I checked in the menu and i have the feature turned on. These particular pictures i took with my 430EXII flash on the camera if that matters. Any idea what is up?

Thanks

On the third page of the Play menus (blue menus), Enable "AF Point Display". Sounds like something turned it off in the update process.

Want to make sure the correct setting is being checked, as there is also "VF display illumination" under the AF menu, which could be mistake for the same setting.

"mistaken"...I r spel gud. The other option, which I assume you were looking toward is that if the focus button is not held down when the photo is snapped, the af point is not displayed on the screen.

Yes, that is correct. It can be very confusing causing some photos to have visible FPs and some to not have them, seemingly in a random fashion if one doesn't recall which were taken after letting go of the BB.

If you have Distortion enabled for the Lens aberration correction feature on the first shooting menu, and you are using a Canon lens with an uploaded profile, the focus points will not show because after distortion correction they are no longer relevant.

This was it! So why is my AF point still not my AF point after this?

Thanks

They should be on new images you capture. The previous images have already been modified with distortion correction info which modifies the shape of the image. Once done the original position of the points in the image are no longer accurate or relevant so they are not displayed. For instance, if originally the center focus point was on a person's right eye, after distortion correction the eye may have shifted and the display of the focal point might now be on the nose or between the eyes. The image is no longer the one you took so the focus point locations are no longer relevant.

This is a new one on me; thanks for the info!

You didn't see my additional edit with an example.

"For instance, if originally the center focus point was on a person's right eye, after distortion correction the eye may have shifted and the display of the focal point might now be on the nose or between the eyes. The image is no longer the one you took so the focus point locations are no longer relevant."

Remember the lens distortion correction affect things like pincushioning. I personally turn that feature off in-camera and apply lens distortion correction in post. But. if you shoot jpegs and do very little post processing it may be useful to turn it on.
