A couple of Rainbow Lorikeets in my backyard.

Rainbow Bee-eaters

Really nice, colourful photos Laurence
They certainly look good on Flickr

Looks like that camera and lens is treating you very nicely :-)
That said, how do you get on with the 100-400?

It is a great and very sharp lens. I would say that the IQ is good enough for a PRO lens. My PL 100-400 is now getting a bit lonely. I am trying to decide whether to keep it or sell it.

But.......

With a maximum aperture of 5.0 to 6.3, it really needs lots of light, unless you are prepared to push the ISO. That one of the two rainbow lorikeets was taken with an ISO of 6400, which should lead to lots of noise on a micro FT system. You really need to make use of noise reduction software if you are going to push the ISO. I have tried both Topaz DeNoise AI and DxO PureRAW and found that DxO PureRAW fits in better with my workflow.

I set the camera to shutter speed priority with auto ISO and set the shutter speed to whatever I think is suitable, which is usually between 1/1000 sec and 1/2000 sec and let the auto ISO choose whatever is suitable. I then run the resulting raw (ORF) flile through DxO PureRAW, before importing the output DNG file into my raw file convertor of choice for further processing.

I usually use Capture One Pro, but have a current subscription to Adobe Lightroom Classic, which I sometimes use.

Thanks Larry
Interesting comments.
I know others use similar settings, but with my 100-400 Panasonic I just stick to ISO 500 and stop down and rely on that. Mostly

I tried your way, but didn't persevere as I couldn't get results I was happy with.
I may have to experiment more.

I do use DeNoise AI extensively and generally get on well with it.

Thanks Richard. You appear to be getting excellent results from your E-M1 Mk II with the PL 100-400. That is a lovely photograph. The only way that I can see that you could improve it would by using a smaller aperture to give you a greater depth of field, so that both birds are in focus. To do that, you would have to push the ISO a bit. So.......

Download a trial version of DxO PureRAW and try the workflow that I used with the maximum value of auto ISO set to 6400. See what happens.

I still have my old E-M1 Mk II and it produces perfectly decent images with ISO 6400 when the images are run through DxO PureRAW, before importing the DNG file into Capture One or Lightroom or whatever else is your preference.

Re-reading what I have written, I can see that I am advising you to spend yet more money on software. That reminds me of my brother's definition of a yacht: "A yacht is a hole in the sea into which you pour your money." ;-)a

Thanks again.
Re aperture, again I found 5.6 generally works, but when more birds appear I crank it up. That's if I remember or am quick enough to catch the moments.

I'll have a look at DxO.

As said, I'll play more. Thanks again.

Hi Richard...This one's a real beauty. The leaves beneath the Fairy Wrens add a very nice element to the composition.

Ah! Bush Turkey. Such an endearing name :-)
Remember seeing them eons ago way up north when we were camping in the scrub.
Fascinating and colourful birds, and you have a pair
Beautiful

These two Superb Fairy Wrens frolicked about on this dead stalk but wouldn't face the camera
I still like it though

Thanks Tom for your very kind words.
I love that spot where the clematis winds itself across the fence, but it needs patience which I imagine many know about :-P
