Hi Peter...The Gambel's Quail is distinguished from the California Quail primarily by the male Gambel's Quail having rust colored patch at the top if its head and a black patch beneath its cream colored breast. There is also a range difference with the Gambel's Quail being more common in the southwest while the California Quail is more common to the west coastal area.
