Incredible shot! Any idea what type of shore bird it was?

it is some type of gull, my guess would be western, or california...based on the bill having a dark spot on the end

Northern Spotted Owls...i think this photo pretty much sums up for me why i found it easy to find the young owlets, and difficult to find the adults.
