Top notch stuff as usual.

Were you using the 1D IV for the extra reach over the 1D X? I know when I upgraded to the 1D X, I felt like all of my long glass was suddenly downgraded (more so than the 18.1- to 16.1-megapixel upgrade if that make's sense).

Yes--Sort of. There were showers around during the start of the game and I had to drive an hour to get to the venue. I didn't want to use my 400mm in the rain. The 300mm is easier to stow if the game gets delayed because of thunderstorms. Last week the game was stopped with 1:49 left in the first half due to lightning. My strategy here was to shoot the first half with the 1D Mark IV and the 300mm (in the light) and then to shoot the second half (in the dark) with the 1D X and the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Because of the rain I decided to go all ambient and skip the flash. It turned out the skies cleared at kickoff. This coming week, if the weather is good, I'll shoot the 1D X and the 400mm for the first half and will probably shoot the second with the 1D Mark IV and the 70-200mm plus flash. I like to experiment. I prefer an effective focal length of around 400mm so either I go with the 400 and the full frame X or the 300 mated to the 1.3 FOVCF 1D Mark IV (1.3 x 300 = 390). What's best? Who knows! I know I want the 1D X if I'm going to shoot images > ISO 6400. Image #8 was at ISO 20,000.

It's getting dark early these days. :-( That's one reason you don't see many galleries of high school football in October on the forum.

Phil
