Having alot of fun with a 6D/70-200mm 2.8 ii. As my daughter moves up form middle school => Jr High => Highschool, the light in these gyms gets better and better. This is good because the action becomes faster and faster.

Great series!!!

I did a day of shooting my girl's Fresh-Soph team yesterday and really struggled being limited to under 3200 for relatively clean shooting on my 5Dii + 70-200 f2.8 mki. Switched to spot focus for more control and it helped at not getting the back wall half the time. Those are super clean for ISO 5000/6400 and spot on AF. Advice?

These gyms yesterday have fluorescent and sunlight so if I struggled with WB. So I shot white and gray cards for calibration in LR CC. I shoot either partial or full metering to get the best result...so alot of trail and error. Shutter priority at anywhere between 1/640 and 1/1000. Auto ISO with an upper limit of 12,800 because the 6D will shoot up to ISO 12,800 reasonably clean and sharp. In LR CC I pull the orange back from the reflection of the floor and then I push the exposure by +.60 - +.80 in these particular pics. So it ends up looking a little different from how it was shot, it looks much cleaner IMHO. I feel that the 70-200 2.8 ii allows the high ISO with a more palatable ISO noise even compared to v1 70-200 2.8.

Nice series. The exposures look good and the IQ looks really good as well. Good job.

The first 3 were more of the back than the faces. The next two were a little better and the last two were the best as far as view of the faces. Also, on the last pic the focus plane was at her feet so that her face was a bit out of focus. Keep shooting and posting more volleyball!

Thanks for the tips. I have 6D envy, LOL ("your camera sure shoots good Mister")... Seriously though; your skills show :)

RE: 70-200 Lens model. Sorry, I corrected my typo. I also have the 70-200 f2.8 IS mk 1 (not Mk 2 - my camera is mkii). Although; I'm unclear on your reference to ISO noise being related to the lens model. The 70-200 Mk ii has better IS, AF, marginally better glass, and modernized motorization but I thought the amount of light it lets thru is identical. What am I missing?

I guess my point is: When pushing the camera/lens to it's upper limit, any improvement is noticeable. If the v2 glass is 5-10% better than the non-IS model (I had the non-IS not the V1), then I was able to see it. I never used a v1 and would agree that tat from what I have read, they are close. And I am not an expert on why, but the noise with this lens in these low light conditions, is different somehow than the non-IS. Either way I am no pro, and have a lot to learn, but I enjoy the results. And the all of the girls on the team absolutely love the pictures. Once they are on Facebook/Instagram they have very little noise.

Thanks for the kind words. Next week I will try shooting opposite to get some through the net and under net to show their faces more. Unfortunately there isn't a high vantage point from either end.

Thanks
Dave

You may have asked already but will the refs allow you to sit/stand on those grey mats? Perhaps directly behind the ref on the net. It would be worth a try.
