Shot this Douglas squirrel at 1/80 sec handheld on a 7D2. It was dark and foggy day and the squirrel was deep in the foliage. Amazing how the lens bailed me out! Worth every penny!

Othewise, why not just stick with a point and shoot superzoom. Mark

Sep 19, 2016 21:18 | #12 I live in a rural area of upstate NY. The average household income is nothing like you would find in a more metropolitan area. Even so, there are plenty of people around here who drive $50,000 pickups and are perfectly willing to spend $5K-$15K every few years on new snowmobiles, ATV's, UTV's, motorcycles, etc. Do you roll your eyes at them too, or is it just specifically photography that you have deemed as not being a hobby worthy of spending money on? Personally, I drive a 10 year old SUV that I bought used and I don't own any of those other toys that I mentioned above. Instead I have some nice glass which holds it's value way better than any of those other things and although I don't make a full time living from it I am slowly recouping my investment over time through print sales, which is a lot more than can be said for anyone who spent the same amount of money on a 4-wheeler.

Sep 19, 2016 21:35 | #14 Hey, most of the people on this forum are from 1st world countries with a fair bit of discretionary income and a fair bit of leisure time to spend money in. I come from a 2nd gen immigrant family and I fully know the struggles my dad went through and how lucky most of us are to live in the US or Australia or Europe or whatever. If that means you have the money to spend on cars, photography, bicycles, boats, whatever, without significantly affecting the well being of yourself or the future of your children, then more power to you. I'm not going to look askance at anyone else's spending choices. All I know is that a 3 hour birding walk Sunday morning feels so good, I have no problems with the fact that I do it with 10 grand of photo equipment on my shoulders! Sam
