HI,

Any suggestions for this one?

I have an EOS 5D MKII I default to RAW + JPG shooting, the largest cards I use are 16GB or 32GB Sandisks or equivalents.

Has anyone any knowledge of a portable Hard drive that can download direct from the camera without a PC / laptop being involved? Is there even such a thing?

(I think there may be, as recently I saw someone on a tourist train loading images from a phone, to an external drive) I was not sure they spoke English / Spanish so could not ask technicalities.

I have seen other similar posts but most relate to phones. All I want to be able to do ( simply put) is to 'plug' in an external drive / device and have it backup the camera contents, belt and braces)

Thanks in advance. McP

Not sure if a "direct" connection can be accomplished but there are an abundance of drives that have a plug in slot for a memory card, which then has its contents written to a hard drive. B&H summarizes there offerings at https://www.bhphotovideo.com …rage/ci/3369/N/4000227848 (external link).

Note that there is a device specifically by Canon and for Canon cameras. The reviews are not great however and on the surface it seems hard to set up. But some of the reviews are old and things may have improved.

Are you looking to then format the cards and keep shooting? If so, I would be very careful when backing up "blind".

If you are just wanting to make another backup and keep the files on your cards, that would be the safer way to go.

There's a portable WD hard drive that takes SD cards and has battery and wifi. You insert the SD card, it copies it, you go back to shooting.

Very best,

Read the reviews before you take the leap.

Many do, including the Canon solution. Check the link I provided in reply #2 above.

Thanks!

Checked it out and not really a portable device because it looks like it's required to be plugged in. I was looking for a SD/CF solution I could use in my car as a backup for my cards, when I don't have a computer handy. Such as on a road trip or camping trip.

The search continues.

Check the Nexto line at the link. Many of them have internal batteries and can also be powered from a USB. Many cars these days have USB power outlets built into the dash and at last resort you can use the cigarette lighter with a USB adapter.

I think the Nexto's also can directly sync to an external USB hard drive should another copy be needed as a backup.

Personally, at the price of memory, I would just buy some extra cards and be done with it. There is little market for these types of devices and the prices (IMO) are not likely to drop much, if at all. A very small marketplace generally means high prices.

Thanks to all for suggestions, I've got some ideas now. Also noted. I would NOT backup Blind and format CF cards for re-use whilst away on vacation. That is asking for it. It was more of a belt and braces thing. Thanks, All.
McP.
