Filenames

When I import pictures into lightroom, even though it is changing them into .dng's the filename and number assigned on my camera both seem completely disregarded and LR recognises it as

untitled-shoot-001.dng and so forth.

I've only been using LR for a few weeks so realise it is probably a setting I haven't found or something I am doing wrong, but I'm struggling to find it and wondering if there is a way to synchronise the filenames assigned on camera to LR or whether it really is a case of having to rename everything. I can see how to create filenames etc. on LR, it's just the synchronising.

You can change the file-naming on import.

Just head over to the File Renaming section and open up the options.

You must have changed the import settings somehow to rename the files. I have been importing and converting to DNG for years, and LR always uses the camera's filename when naming the imported images.

On the Import screen, on the right side, is a menu labeled "File Renaming." Make sure that the "Rename Files" box there is not checked.

Just chiming in, there is definitely a way to do it so that it preserves the original file number, using the "Custom" renaming. I'm not in front of Lightroom right now so I'll try to remember off the top of my head. I believe you use the "filename number suffix" in your custom file renaming to preserve the file number. For instance, mine is (I think)
(Custom text)_(YYYYMMDD)_(File​name number suffix 0000).dng

So if I type in "Vacation" in my Custom Text box, it'll rename the file Vacation_20160831_0452​.dng where the original file was numbered something like IMG_0452.dng

If you use "sequence" number it'll always start at 1 every time you import. Or 0001, depending on which sequence format you choose.

It's important to note that the little preview of the filename will always start at 1 or 0001 until you actually start the import, because it doesn't look at the actual filename while you're setting up the custom file renaming.

My impression was that the OP wanted to just use the name/sequence number assigned by the camera. If not, the other renaming options mentioned above will allow other convention. If all that is desired is the camera name/number, just uncheck the rename box.

Thank you all, yes pknight, you are right I just want to use the name and number assigned by the camera - the reason is because I am trying to sort out a 'smooth' workflow haha, whereby I'm wanting to import photos from my camera, save immediately to dropbox etc. and so then when I'm importing them into LR for editing, I would rather know without needing to remember that they maintain the same filenames in terms of name and number, even if it's just IMG_0765 or whatever.

I will search for the rename box - can't see it on the import screen but I think it's exactly something like that that I must have accidentally ticked.

It should be there if you select "Copy as DNG", "Copy", or "Move" but not if you select "Add".

Got it, thanks. It seems so dopey, but I hadn't seen the full importing screen, so hadn't seen that menu on the right hand side at all. I've been importing just using the very small pop up option.
