That 85 will be big... but it will be mine!

85 1.4 ART = $1199
12-24 F4 ART = $1599
500mm F4 OS Sport = $5999

The 85 is obviously a completely overhaul on the optics. The previous was not bad at all and was my most used/favorite lens. I've held out and actually sold my sigma 85 a few months back in anticipation this lens would be announced this time frame. It's big.... roughly the same size as the Zeiss 85mm OTUS. with hood retracted about 7.5" in length. The lens itself is 3.76" wide x 6" long.

EDIT: Updated MTF with all the other art primes next to it. Clearly their better performer yet.

If the build/performance of the 500 f/4 holds up to current Sport standards, we could have quite a battle between them and Canon coming up.

**Title correction... the 500mm is designated as a SPORT edition not ART.

.

Corrected, and in my haste, it read "SPART" for a few seconds! ;)

I have been praying for this (the 500mm) since 2004/5 when I was still shooting the EX 500mm f/4.5 HSM!

Well played SIGMA, well played.

Now get the to a designery and put forth the 300-800mm "OS Wild Life" (OK, you CAN call it sport, but you KNOW it will be used for wildlife like 10x more)

Just sucks... here it is wanting to ditch the 15-30 because of it's massiveness and they had to release a monster sized 85 that will most likely weigh more ugh. I have NOT been able to find the weight specs yet so please if anyone finds that post here. Thanks,

MTF look GOOD. Easily as sharp/sharper than the 35mm ART which started it all. I'll be very very happy with this lens.

Too rich for me. I'll keep my 85/1.8 and if I were to upgrade, I would be going with the Tamron VC. The 12-24 I was hoping to be that tweener UWA lens that could get me much wider on crop and still be ready to be used on full frame down the road. But at $1600, I wouldn't use it enough to justify it. The 500/4 will be great for many, but my wife would cut them off if I tryed to bring that one home.

Any word on the weight of the 500mm? I wonder if it as hand holdable as Canon's Ver II, which is very light and easy to handle.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I have the older 85mm 1.4, and it is awesome. It's hard to imagine what they would improve. Bigger, heavier, more expensive? Not very tempting. I will try to avoid the upcoming thread, lest it change my mind;-)a

It's AF motor has 1.3x the torque of the non art version apparently so focussing should be snappier. I loved the original too. The main advantage I see is that it can be used on the dock to cure AF issues which was the main negative on the original. I suppose it could have better contrast wide open too

That sounds nice and light - 1400 grams less than my current long lens (though a bit shorter).

I always fancied the Sigma 500 F4.5 until it's price went silly. The F4.5 (no AF with 2 x extender) and slow AF put me off. If this new lens is priced sensibly and delivers the goods then it may be very interesting. We will have to wait and see.............

That's not bad. my 500 II is a bit lighter, closer to 3000g. My lens is very hand holdable.
