In a video by Adorama with a Sigma Rep, he stated the 85mm Art is weather sealed as well so that's a first for the Art series right?

I thought so.

Don't know if everyone has seen but Matt Granger posted some samples of the 85mm art.

Sharpness wise seems to be the same as their current 85mm. I guess the advantages of the Art seem to be much faster AF, weather sealing and less CA.

Not sure why I never bothered to check the MTF from the previous 85 to the new 85 Art.

Clearly a jump in performance. Less astigmatism so CA should be improved and the sharpness gets a good jump. Should mate very well to a 5D4 30MP sensor... not too taxing on the lens but definitely will utilize the extra sharpness. Micro contrast is the biggest gain. This thing looks great.

Old 85 left and art on right

Are MTF charts by Sigma true to real world results? I know looking into MTF charts in general I read this:

AFAIK, they are actually theoretical based on the design specs, the engineering and the expected performance characteristics for what a given lens should do in real life.

If you're comparing same mtf methods, then yes. New mtf scores are much better, it will translate into real world. Of course bokeh is about as important for a portrait lens ( not in mtf)

From memory Lens Rentals got similar results for the old 85 on their optical test bench so I guess at least the left side of that comparison is fairly representative. The right hand side could be a different story and we won't know until geeks get their mitts on a few copies

Hmmmm. This is bad: because I want ;-)a

I've rented the 35A a couple of times and loved it on the 5D3, but don't feel I need it that often (enough to buy one).

I'm not that excited by ultra shallow DOF at 50mm for some reason. I have a Canon 50mm f/1.4, and while a better lens would obviously be sharper, the wide open look at 50mm just doesn't do it for me.

A razor sharp 85mm f/1.4 would be nice though!

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Sold all my gear to fund a 200sf treehouse for the family, and just rent when I want to shoot now....... but when I get around to purchasing a new body the 85 art will be lens numero uno me thinks!

200 sf is impressive. I built my own many years back, still holding up today. Had to replace some steps, only minor issues. Adults and kids alike frequently go up this thing.
