Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Tripod Collar?

Prefer to have a Tripod Collar but the non IS version does not come with one, There are several 3rd party collars available but have very mixed reviews. Some even have a green tint to them? Has anyone bought one from Amazon that is decent enough? Don't feel like paying $150 for the legit Canon one.

The Vello one from B&H is $50. No experience with it first hand but I have other Vello products and they are well built.

Not sure why you want a collar though. I have never felt the need with my 70-200/4 IS.

I agree, this is a light lens and collar is unnecessary. If you've got drooping of your ballhead with a camera and this lens I'd recommend investing in a new one.

I also agree. The version with IS only weighs 760g, around 27oz. it is certainly light enough to be comfortably hand held, and even for tripod use a collar is not necessary assuming, as you suggested, the ballhead is a good one.

I have the Vello collar and I like it for hand-holding with this lens on my 70D. Don't know why but it makes for a more comfortable, stable platform than the bare lens in my hand. As for its quality, it seems quite good (I've used it for a year now).

No, I got it as a tripod collar but found I like using it for holding the lens with my hands.

I got one of the black ones on Amazon, for like $8~15 or so. Works fine.

I also got a Fotodiox one, closer to $45, also works fine.

I use a lens collar on the 70-200 F4L & 200 F2.8L when doing landscapes at telephoto, and other things. Lots of studio folk use them too. Good tools.

It is, I like it.

I got some knockoff for my IS and it works just fine. I think it was $50.
Still too expensive for what it is but there you go... everything is expensive.

I just looked on eBay and the one I have is $6. My local shop completely ripped me off. Grrrr....

The Canon one is $144 and change. What a rip.

And for those saying it is necessary... well that's true but I do love switching from landscape to portrait quickly and easily without monkeying with my bullhead or repositioning my L plate.
It is fast. Works great.

I can verify that it fits and works great. Its metal and not plastic, the screw thread and the latch are build solid. Agree with everyone else, the Canon one is a complete rip-off. Canon should be ashamed of themselves for suggesting day time robbery type pricing for their accessories. Then again, there's a sucker born every minute and Canon are in it to make money, not to please us.

For many years I used 70-200 F4L IS without a tripod collar. Worked most of the time, but sometimes, it did give me trouble especially on sand. So I decided to invest in this accessory. So far I am very happy with it. I also have a RC2 quick release late mostly attached to it, allows me to quickly snap the collar on the lens when I need to mount it.
