so i've got an up coming vaction in mid october

in the past on vacations ,with the 5d3 and t4i , my sd 2 cards are modest 32 gig (plus one 32g CF) cards , i would bring laptop and at the end of everyday transfer all the files..

well this time around i'd like to travel lighter and not bring the laptop... and 'im not bringing the 5d3 or t4i.

instead i'm bringing my Pana GX8 and sony a7sii..

so in preparation for this trip i'm purchasing some items .. for my thirstier than canon cameras... that is batteries and SD cards..

so i've got the battery issue sorted.. getting an extra pair of wasabi batteries for both cameras..

And more Sd cards..

for the Panasonic , ive been using (since i've owned it) Lexar professional 633x cards . it has handled 4k video perfectly fine ..

and for the A7sII ,,when i bought it , i was advised to use sandisk extreme pro and not the lexar i had.. and so i took BandH's rep"s advice.. and that has worked perfectly ..

and so now i'm sitting here trying to order SD cards and ,
i'm trying to figure out what the difference between these two cards that i have are?, if any , as the numbers all seem to match up... both USH 1/U3 -10 95mb/s
however there a bit of a price difference..

i assume the a7ssii would be more demanding so i put in the lexar ,, and did a few minutes of 4k.. worked fine.. but i'd hate to load up on these to save a few bucks only to find out after my vacation that all my video files are skipping frames or something..

Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks

Either of what you picture should work fine, assuming the cards are genuine. If you aren't aware there are many counterfeit cards in the marketplace so get them from a reliable source. On line chose reputable vendors like Adorama, B&H, etc. For retailers, check sales at Best Buy, Staples, etc.

In theory you should be looking for a SDXC class U3 card. All U3 SDHC and SDXC Cards have a minimum data write speed of 30 Megabytes per second, which is fast enough for 4K video. But the read/write speeds quoted in advertisements are generally the "peak" speeds, not the minimum sustained speed. U3 defines a minimum sustained speed suitable for 4K video and that is why Sony recommends an SDXC U3 class card.

Stick with the brand names like SanDisk, Lexar, or even the Sony cards if you can find them at a reasonable price.

There is also some good discussion at https://suggestionofmotion.com …memory-card-requirements/ (external link).

I use lexar and sandisk.

I've gravitated towards Sandisk Extreme pro for my SD cards. 90 MB/s write speeds is welcoming and I've seldom ever heard compatibility issues.

For folks in the US those cards are dirt cheap!!!! I wish I could say the same for my local area :(

I prefer Sandisk, typically Ultra rather than extreme, but for 4K you should look at the options. Also, consider 1080p video, 4K seems like overkill for a holiday.

Possibly not an issue but from what I read about my 80D even with 1080 vid a card may get written over 60MB/s. This is one reason why I just spend a tad more for extreme pro.

Honestly for me if I buy online it's a pain in the rear to return stuff so I just bite my tongue and get the Extreme Pro.

The Sandisk ultra i think they are 30mb/s write speeds. I could be mistaken.

Thanks all for the input..

i ended up getting the sandisk extreme pros over the specific lexars mentioned..

i mean i still have that one lexar that i already had with the panasonic.. and that will continue to be its default card..

but i went with the sandisk;s as the extreme pros are hightly rated , and so i will be able to use them and be worry free.

theyve worked flawlessly with my a7sii and from what i hear they are one of hte few cards the can do the canons 5d4's 4k video at 5ooMbps.. so i dont have a 5d4 , but the point is they are among the few in its class that can handle that

and yes of course 4k is over kill for a vaca...
but this is my first opportunity to really test out the a7sii so why not...

... All U3 SDHC and SDXC Cards have a minimum data write speed of 30 Megabytes per second, which ..

Incorrect info here. SD?X has NOTHING to do with the speed of the card, it refers to the capacity categories only. SDHC is 2GB-32GB. SDXC is 32GB and up. That's it, nothing more.

U3, is similar to Speed Class rating, it requires a 30MB/s read and write under certain pre-determine data pattern. The pattern is, without going into lots of detail, a indefinite length of random chunks of sequential data. The take away here is that the data isn't purely sequential. A memory card that is U3 rate will write pure sequential data at 30MB/s or more. But a card that can write pure sequential data at > 30MB/s mayor may not meet U3.

Sandisk Extreme Pro can write at 90MB/s and read at 95MB/s, both are limited by UHS-I interface. Lexar 633x will read at 95MB/s, but only write at 45MB/s. So with video shooting, you probably wont see differences because 30MB/s is probably the incoming data rate. With still, Sandisk will probably clear the buffer faster than Lexar 633

The thing to remember is when SD card claim to have xx as transfer speed, it is 99.999% of the time refer to sequential read speed. It is the case with this Lexar 633.

Between these two card, Sandisk Extreme Pro gets my vote. Lexar 633 is in the same grade as Sandisk Extreme.

Sandisk Ulta will read at 30MB/s, but wont write at 30MB/s. Today's ultra will only write at about 12-15MB/s if not a bit less. All Ultra SD cards are with TLC flash. Extreme and Extreme Pro is MLC until they transition to 3D NAND
