my daughter's marching band is doing a '40s swing themed show this year and they called me yesterday and asked if i could shoot a couple of "couple's" portraits...

i did a quick perusal for the style and look and headed to the school with my cheap speedlight/umbrella set up...

i also dug out a WWII uniform for the husband including glasses, watch and a set of wedding rings for them...

the director liked the "looking off into the distance" pose so i had the kids strike it in addition to the other more conventional look...

i use my speedlites and RT controller so infrequently it takes about 45 minutes to try and set up 2 different flash amounts. i think these are a little bit flat lighting wise but 1/3 a stop of flash power left what i thought looked like terribly harsh shadows.

i used a 40" umbrella high and about 45o right of the camera and a 60" umbrella subject level and about 65o left of camera. i THINK i had 1 stop difference in power...

i tried to PS out the reflection in the eyeglasses but i did like the results so i left it...

A couple thoughts..

1. may want to go back and white with these, or a toned sepia.. just to give it a bit more of the feel.

2. may want to have them take off glasses, while in the same pose, so you can ps in the eyes.. sometimes that works best.

the first pose seems stiff, and composition seems off (slicing his shoulder etc..) checking some period poses may help this out.

My mistake, I didn't realize this fit into the section of 'sepia'. the background is perfect as I remember and have seen some older photos of my dad in the 40-50's. The hats are too cute.

the hats, dresses and uniform (i dont know about the suit coat) are all 1940s vintage...

the background is actually a white 10x20 amazon muslin background. exposed for the kids and about 1 stop under for the background gave me a nice gray tone which of course turned tan when i played with the color temp...
