Hi,

Recently I have had a few people ask me for use of my photos however searching for how much I should charge has left me confused as most of what I have found is aimed at professionals and anything I have found at the amateur level hasn't fitted with the circumstances. My work is not professional and mostly of my local area. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction on how I should base my charging of photos.

So far I have had the following two requests for using an image other than requesting a print:

The first request was for use of an image on a Website/Social Media for a small company run by a friend. They would require a web sized version and a larger version (~3000px wide).

The second request was from a local hospital charity asking if they could use a couple of photos of local sites to sell at their hospital (small, rural hospital) in the form of greetings cards and postcards. It seems that they are new to asking for photos as they have usually been donated in the past but they are looking to refresh their stock with new images. Credit would be given and they understand that a cost would be involved so it is not like they are asking for them for free. Any money raised goes back into the hospital itself. Part of me is thinking that it is a charity and I don't want to be cheeky in asking for money even though I am well within my rights to do so.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy

Most of what you have found would be aimed at pros I'd say...as once you charge for something that steps past amateur and into professional.

As for what to charge you could maybe take a look at stock sites and see what they would charge for similar use?

Don't be fooled by the idea of not charging the charity - they'll be making money from your work!

I didn't think of it like that, I would have thought a professional would be someone making a living from it rather than just selling a few prints and getting the odd request to use the images.

I just had a look at Alamy and selected an imaged that allowed you to choose a rights-managed license and it has estimated as £105.00 using the following:

Consumer Goods
Postcards
Upto 1000
Lasting 1 year
Region - UK and Commonwealth Excluding Canada

If say the print run was limited to 500, then would a figure of £90 sound reasonable for the charity using the image for postcards/greetings cards?
