My boxing adventures are really starting to come together. This was the fight where I was going to put my 20D in the truss and fire it remotely, but the lighting contractors' truck broke down and they were running about 1/2 day behind causing a lot of stress to I took that as a sign to put it off until next time. I did have two bodies, 1D Mark IIN with 24-70mm f/2.8 and 1D Mark II with 300mm f/2.8 for shooting the corners between rounds. Since the other two or three guys shooting are all very experienced I try to do something in addition to the normal shots.

The main event was Vic Darchinyan, the defending IBF/IBO Flyweight champion, vs. Diosdado Gabi, in which Vic successfully defended his title knocking Gabi to the floor a couple of times. The co-main event, Anotony Mora vs. Tustam Nugaev was also a good fight.

The other fights were pretty sad only going a couple of rounds before one of the fighters was down and didn't want to get up ... totally overwhelmed by the winner.

This was the first time I have used Custom White Balance and it is a significant improvement over Auto White Balance. I am now so enamored of it that I used it to great benefit at a poker tournament I shot yesterday to great effect. TV light is golden. Poker tournament light was greenish until the last table when it was switched to blueish (very cold) for effect.

Well, I am rambling. Here's the collage and few images:

Below, Gabi lands a good punch on Darchinyan, but Vic is really very tough:
IMAGE: http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/ChumashBoxing03032006/DarchinyanGabi2474-1000.JPG

Here is a more typical of the match image ... notice how Vic is holding Gabi's arm. The other "trick" he used was to use his hips and knees against Gabi when he had him at any disadvantage. I'm a fight newbie so I don't know if either of these things is legal:

This is Jake Gutierrez out of Henerson, Nevada, who has been at the last two fights.

Here's Mora whaling on Nugaev who didn't put up much of a fight:
IMAGE: http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/ChumashBoxing03032006/MoraNugaev1935-1000.JPG

And another of about the same:
IMAGE: http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/ChumashBoxing03032006/MoraNugaev2013-1000.JPG

This is the sort of thing shooting with the 300mm between rounds or at the start/end can pick up:

Dave_G, thanks ... my timing isn't all that great and I tend not to be prepared for some action shots such as when the ref makes the KnockOut sign when someone gives up.

Mills, thanks, I like those, too. You can see a couple of the ring girls in the collage or on my website and while they are nice eye candy I don't have the time for a thread! :-)

A. thanks, this is my fifth fight and I learn a little more each time.

I'm not much of a boxing fan (must be a girl thing...) but that last shot is just a stunner!

Hey Dwight - the first shot really works for me... head being blurred doesn't bother me in the least. Just a rocl solid feel from that image. Second shot, the same style head blurring doesn't work at all for me - his head almost looks smudged. The 5th image is the other one that catches my eye. Fun stuff Dwight...

Nice work, I like the last shot best. No glimpse of location but you just know it's a fight scene.

dave502, thank you ... if you were ringside you would be covered with blood, sweat and vaseline, sigh ... a **** to clean off the lenses!

ee, a "girl thing!", hmmm, how about this from a previous card I shot about six months ago:

IMAGE: http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/ChumashBoxing07222005/Boxing2252-1000.jpg

Scotty, thank you.

Mark, the blurring is caused by the impact of the glove against the head ... there is almost nothing to be done about it given the lighting ... it actually demonstrates that you got the frame at the 'instant of impact'.

Airedale, thank you, yes, cropped a little tight on the right but the fighter was moving around so it was just a lucky frame.

Jungie, NBD ... besides the 24-70mm and the 300mm I have also used a 70-200mm but it is just a bit too long. Many like the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 but I have tried my f/1.4 for this.
