We have our first grandchild. We've been practicing newborn photography using her as our model.

Please provide thoughts and feedback.

Both of these are set up very well and I like the results. The egg in the basket seems a little out of place.

How did you light these?

Thank you. I see what you mean concerning the egg in the basket.

I used an AB 800 and 48" softbox on the left side and used natural light from window on right.

These are very well lit and posed. I love the rustic look that the wood provides. I don't care for the blue BG in #2, more wood would be better.

I really like her expression in #2. Nice catch and set up, but I think a simpler backdrop more consistent in color with the foreground (warm tones) would improve the shot.

I think both are well done also. I agree the egg seems out of place in the first one and would rather have the legs closed/crossed. I also do not care for the blue background in #2. The other thing is I can not tell by the pictures if the baby is a girl or a boy? The first picture leads me to think a boy but the 2nd one make me think a girl. I know this is not a big deal, but for me I would want it to show the sex of my baby a little more? Either way your grandchild is a doll!

I could do be wrong but I'm assuming that was done on purpose so they could practice the boy look and the girl look.

Congrats, well done:-) The only thing I would add is it looks like the focus in #2 is on the front of the pink fringe. The camera tends to want to focus on whatever is closest to it, so just watch that.

But it looks like you're good to go!

I admire the imaginative staging and the gentle lighting in both, except that in #1 the angle of the planks makes the whole scene look tilted. We're looking down at a table or a floor, but it doesn't seem level.

A gender-neutral effect doesn't bother me. In fact, I prefer it to dressing a girl in a cloud of pink fluff and lace and ribbons or putting a boy in a miniature blue suit against a background of sailboat wallpaper. Why start the stereotyping so early? There'll be quite enough of it later.

In #1, the face could be in sharper focus. A slight softness on any other body parts is less important.

Love the nest idea but perhaps either make a big cracked egg or get an Ostrich egg.

For some reason the pose of the baby in the first one isn't working for me. I think that maybe curled up in the nest or with the legs closed would work. Other than that, I like the lighting and post processing.
