thanks Jarvis, I think the Robin had a better capture!
You studying the a9 yet? ooops, just remembered your staying all Canon.
Let me know when you want a 1DXii :) I can do you a package deal with a 500mm IS ii when you're ready.
I just need the e-mount 400mm to be F4 when they release it.

If Sony is listening to wildlife shooters, they will release a 400 f4--so hard to say what they will do.

Your a99ii shots keep getting better and better! Must be the improving weather? :)

I keep going back and forth on what I want to do. There is so much great gear available right now, it is almost like you can't go wrong.

It is all a matter of how deep into my pocket I want to go.

Full disclosure, I think about getting an RX-10iii sometimes and just calling it a day. Selling everything else off, just rolling with one super-zoom/body. People seem to rave about the glass, and we know the sensor is very capable.

I have a big trip (well, for me) coming up. Vegas for five days and then Big Sky, MT for four days.

Looking at the map, Yellowstone looks like a very manageable drive from Big Sky--where the wife will be in conferences most of the day for a few days. Anyone with experience at Yellowstone, feel free to chime in!

From what I understand, 400mm is the bare minimum for what one should have there. I'm considering renting a Tammy 150-600, but I question if I will have room to bring it. The Minolta 200/2xTC combo is so compact, will probably just roll with that.

I'm not a very good landscape photographer, but it seems like even I should be able to manage some nice shots out there.

Excited for you going to Yellowstone. Once there, between airport in Jackson Hole
and the Park a buffalo zipped across the road, him doing at least 40mph and I swear
he took the chrome off the bumper----it was that close. Point, well at YS you can get
really close sometimes.
What if Sony puts out 400/4 in e-mount? That would change my photography life forever.
You'd see a lot of Canon kit in the buy-sell forum at Fred-Miranda.
The RX10iii is primo. I've always wanted one--I'm just waiting for AF trickle down to it and
at least hybrid/phase/contrast in it. Then it would become the instant best lightweight wildlife
rig. They could give it more buffer too :)
Mickey you're right about choices....just lots of good one these days.

I said I'm sticking with Canon exclusively "at the moment" but we all know moments are fleeting right? I actually put in a pre-order on the a9 last night. As this forum has stated time and time again, I've been known to get cold feet when it comes to moving away from Canon, so we'll see if I see it through this time, but for the moment I'm a future owner of a Sony a9. I could care less about the 20 fps (although I wanted something with around 10), but the biggest sellers for me are the AF, the 93% frame coverage by AF points, the silent shooting, and the EVF is supposed to be phenomenal. I will admit that it's more camera than I need. Honestly, if they made an a99ii in E mount at the same price point that would be my dream camera. Only care about E mount because Sony seems far more dedicated to that lens lineup over the A mount.

Sony does look a bit dumb at this point though, since they originally claimed that the A99ii still needed an SLT to accomplish it's AF, then 6 months later they're releasing a mirrorless with even better AF. I do understand that they're completely different beasts. The a99ii 42MP sensor is a monster compared to the 24MP of the a9, and I think tech is still a bit off on 20fps write times on a 40+ MP sensor. I'm not a scientist, but I'm not quite sure how the MP of a sensor would dictate AF though.

But anyway, I do have some concerns about the a9. Mainly the size. I have big hands. Hands that have always had a grip extension even on my 5D cameras, not because I need more battery, but because I find it more comfortable due to the size of my hands. I did order the grip extension along with the a9, but watching Tony and Chealsea's video on the a9, one photographer commented that his hands were getting wedged between the a9 grip and the sony 70-200 2.8, which is definitely going to be one of my most used lenses. That is my only concern at this point, but it's kind of a big one......

Buffalo crossing the road at high speeds? That settles it, I'm not renting anything smaller than a mid-sized SUV.

A guy I used to work with up in New Hampshire hit a Moose late at night after coming back from a concert--destroyed his car, although I can't remember what kind he had. I do remember him telling me that as tempted he was to try and drive under it, that is the one thing you should never do. Apparently, it is one of the best ways to get decapitated while driving. Who knew?

Sony really has a chance to step on the neck of its collective competition if it makes the right lens choices over the next several years. Conversely, Canon and Nikon will have to step up the plate and meet the challenge. Everyone wins with competition!

I can imagine the RX10iii doesn't quite have the AF to effectively bird, but that Sony can cram that much kit into one body/lens is remarkable to me.

Did you last FL trip go well? It was gorgeous weather up in Tallahassee while you were in FL, and I assume you had similar weather where you were.

Jarvis, isn't it pretty crazy that the 70-200 GM can be found new for less than the 70-200 SSM G2?

I'm excited that you are even contemplating taking the plunge to A9. Not many on POTN have gone as far as to Pre-Order AFAIK.

Many places the 70-200GM can be found for less new than the 70-200G2 used, which yes is very crazy. I think more probably have put in pre-orders than we might think, according to B&H the a9 is a #1 seller. I'm not sure what needs to happen to get that title, but that's what it says on their site. Unfortunately I think that a lot of members don't want to speak up about their mirrorless use, as it's still met with much criticism by many members here. better stay clear or places like that, bunch of people with tinfoil hats spreading propaganda, that ever used mirrorless camera in their life.

Sony is doing one thing extremely well, making all those people super paranoid and making them question their gear choices, making them feel insecure about it, and lash out on the forums to make them feel superior.

Sony really struck a nerve with an a9 :)

I was following an occasionally commenting on that thread but it just got too toxic for my taste. I even asked a mod to lock it, as kind of a mercy-killing, knowing it was a long-shot.

But you are right, there are likely many more POTN members pre-ordering the a9 than I suspect.

haha exactly. I refuse to turn this thread into a gear debate, but I will say one thing, Canon is still reacting to mirrorless the same way they did when it burst onto the scene a few years ago. Late. It took Canon years to make the EOS M5 something that could even remotely compete with the Sony A6XXX line, and now they just announced they're releasing a FF mirrorless end of 2018?! lol. You can get on Sony for multiple releases in a short period of time, but they never make you wait for their products, at least not long. They announced two new E mount lenses and they were available for pre-order the next day. They announced the a99ii out of no where (no one was expecting that) and you could pre-order very soon after. Same with the a9. Canon announces something you have to wait a year and a half for lol.

Anyway, back to the beautiful images MedicineMan. Sorry you're the only one contributing images to this forum. Hopefully I can join you once the a9 comes in!

Jarvis awesome on your a9.
I hope to join you down the road once I see the FE100-400 + 1.4TC results.
Like you I don't need 20fps....shooting an arrow through a balloon? catching a speeding bullet 1/32000 sec?? Why
do I need this? Oh, its to get that perfect wing position! Silent shutter? Yep, I've freaked out some birds with the 1DXii
machine gun. Now AF points. I was shooting a99ii yesterday, set up for Bluebirds but had just put the hawks food on the tower
and in he comes before I can even get to my seated position....the a99ii brought up quickly and rat a tap tap nailed him, but nothing
I haven't gotten with the hawk a hundred times over---point, that the AF of the a99ii is incredible, but we all know that. Considering
the a9 is going to be better is over the top and almost the entire sensor covered. Sony just keeps giving and giving.

Also seems like Sony has addressed almost (not withstanding the ergonomics for you big handed folk) all the issue---e.g. battery life/dual slots/etc.
that plagued the A7 series.
Speaking of, just did a Metabones update and the 70-300L works a charm on the A7Rii....doesn't help me since I have the FE 70-300G; still hunts
too much for me on the EOS 100-400ii.

But but but, aren't the rumors grinding away that the a9 will enjoy true AF via Metabones with EF lenses ??? I'll believe it when I see it but if true
then that will bridge a lot of Canon owners.

Mickey, you know how much I wanted that Mino 400 to work out :( I actually had a dream about an e-mount 400/4 !!! If they announce it I'll cave
immediately regardless of how the FE100-400 does with a TC :)
Yep, big moose in Yellowstone....decapitation not allowed.

I have not heard anything about this, but I hadn't even considered the metabones based on the terrible reviews I read constantly on other EF lens to E mount cameras. Mainly things like "might as well just use it in manual focus" and doesn't work at all with my 70-200". For my job I need close to 100% accuracy of focus, and I need it fast too, in many low light situations. Think of my job as photographing wedding receptions 100% of the time. That's not what it is, but similar type situations. A certain facial expression, or certain person clapping or giving a reaction could be the difference between getting the perfect shot and not. Therefore I didn't even purchase a metabones adapter with my a9. I'm planning on using my 5D3 while I learn the Sony system, and slowly transitioning over. No Canon lenses on Sony bodies. Same as I would have with the a99ii.
