Jarvis, that's the difference between you and me! I can play with inconsequential results whereas you have monies/career on the line!
For what I love to do I need long focal length and the Metabones with EF lenses has always failed me. Like you'll be keeping the venerable 5Diii
for a while I'll also keep a Canon. I'd loose the 1DXii before giving up the 7Dii in this case ~pixel density for cropping advantage~

It wouldn't surprise me to find out though that Sony worked with Metabones overtime for the 'special sauce' in the newest Metabones V and the latest
firmware update on the Metabones IV to be way better with the a9. I don't understand all the nuances of language translation involved in the inner mind
of the Metabones though.

Hey, just thought of a what if. What if Sony brought out 400mm's for e-mount and a-mount!
Ah, that'll never happen.

Well Metabones would have to have both Sony and Canon on board if they wanted the metabones to work smoothly between both. I have read many reviews that the Sigma adapter (EF to E mount cameras) works almost flawlessly with Sigma glass. But it also struggles with Canon L lenses. There is a photographer online I follow that used the Sigma glass on E mount bodies, and loves it. But his primary work is models who aren't moving in mid day sun, so to say he had the perfect focusing conditions all the time would be an understatement!

As far as the 400mm from Sony, I wouldn't sleep on that. I've been hearing phenomenal things about the new 100-400 E mount. Question is are you ok with f5.6? Or f8 if you want a 1.4TC. I'm not sure how well the TC works either, and not sure how many E mount cameras support AF across the frame at f8. Worth looking into.

A9 will focus up to f11 across entire frame.

Good to know. Well then the 100-400 would be a possible wildlife lens even with a 2X converter on it!

I don't know about 2.0TC with FE 100-400 but my EOS 100-400ii with 1.4TCiii works a charm
on the 1DXii, I can see no IQ loss with it (though I know it does a bit), AF is snappy and all focal points.
Nekro thanks for pointing out the a9's af point ability, is that F11 even with the 2.0 ??
I don't plan on the 2.0, the 1.4 is fine.
I've stated before, when I look at my BIF folder on Flickr many many 400mm + 1.4TC so that focal length
means a lot.
Should have already had it with the sold Minolta 400mm but it just didn't satisfy me (copy variance I'm sure) on
the a99ii. And it's because of that Minolta hurting me that I'm waiting out results before the plung.

Now a 400mm in FE just has to happen. I guarantee it, either that or a 500mm but I need 400mm F4.

With the a99ii I'll just make do with the 70-400Gii eh :) From this afternoon-

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

Which brings up a point that may become an issue with the a9 for me=cropability. Just wish it had 30mp's on board, that
and 15fps would have been my sweet spot.

yes it is

would you think 100-400 with 1.4 would better then these cheap telephoto lenses from tamron and sigma like the recent 150-600s?

Hmmmm. I'd argue against cheap. I'd say affordable :) and my Tam 150-600 in a-mount I think is an excellent lens and copy.
Now that is a-mount. I've had the 150-600 Tam 1st gen in EOS mount and ditched it as soon as I got the 400DOii...crops from the DO
were better than 600mm from that Tamron version.
Now I have the Tam 150-600Gii in EOS and like it for other reasons. If IQ increased it is just a smidge--not enough to upgrade, but the dock,
the swiss-arca foot are niceties and I think (not 100 percent) that it has better weather sealing. I've used it even with Tam's 1.4TC and it's not
bad, but no EOS level either-

Enough rambling, to answer your question I can only hope that the FE100-400 at its price will be better than the Tam or Sigma alone AND with TC. It better be because
with TC the FE100-400 is $3000 versus $1399 for the Tam G2.

have you tried the tammy g2 ef mount on sony FE?

I had Tamron G1 then I made a mistake of selling it and I bought Sigma 150-600 sport, that lens was huge and not fun to use, and in my eyes didn't really gain any IQ, after I sold the sport I bought the sigma contemporary lens, I didnt have a chance to compare tamron and sigma side by side, but the sigma C lens just feels slower on sony then Tammy.

Nekro, no, I've never put the EOS Tam G2 onto the A7rii or a6300.
Should I try the combo?
Mostly with adapted lenses via Metabones I've been overall dissatisfied with any long focal length. Wide
angles seem to work fine. Just yesterday I put a Tamron 15-30mm onto A7Rii via Metabones T iv and it was snappy
quick but any long EF lens I've tried always suffers at the long end (and I'm using the latest firmware with Metabones).
I know the Sigma weight pain. I had at one time the 120-300mm and just too too heavy for me--it's even heavier
than the Canon 500ISii which is becoming too heavy quickly.

A side note....doesn't Sony own something like 11-15 percent of Tamron? That probably has something to do with Sony bodies
and Tamron lenses if true.

Well I got my tracking info for the a9. I was kind of expecting it to be out of stock like the a99ii was, especially because I put in my pre-order so late. So either there was way less interest in this camera, or Sony was way more on top of things and had more units ready at pre-order. I'm going to guess the latter, which bolsters my ongoing theory that the a99ii was a bit of a science project for Sony. See if people were still interested in A mount or not.

Finally got one of the neighborhood hawk I plan to print in metal and put on the wall.
The a99ii I find to still be quite a remarkable camera. This shot is one frame plucked out of 15 that
all could be printed in my estimation.
Next week (UPS says Monday) the alpha9 will arrive.
I just checked DXO's report on the a9 and it is eerily similar to the a99ii in their scores....of course numbers mean
very little in the real world...just a curiosity.
Man it really does look like I'm finally making the move away from Canon. My EOS mount Tam 150-600G2 shipped this week
and a buyer is on the verge for my 100-400ii. The big boy and the 500ISii are not long in my world either :)

What a fantastic capture! The detail you get out of that combo really is fantastic, and by Christmastime I would love to have an a99ii to call my own.

I'm very interested to see how you get on with the a9 vs the a99ii once you have both as well as the FE100-400. I'm guessing you'll be a very happy camper!

Mickey it is quite the unknown at this point.
You know the a99ii will spoil for detail/cropability.
I'm curious too as to which one I grab.
Everyday this week when I wake in the afternoon I go out and shoot something.
Every day I've grabbed the a99ii.
So the a9 might disappoint in some ways. I think for trips though it will be good paired
with the A7Rii.
Now what if, what if Sony brings out not only the 400 prime in e-mount but also a-mount!
What a quandary that would be ;)
