Hello everyone.
Last spring got in a financial bind and sold all my camera gear. Now in a position to purchase again and have a question.
Last camera I had was the 60D. Liked it alot. Now I have been looking at both the 60d and the 7D. Was wondering what your thoughts are on either one.
I do not do any one particular type of photography.

Do you currently have any lenses?
Do you need the 19 point AF system of the 7D, or will the 9 point of the 60D suffice?
What is your budget?
Both the 60D and 7D can be had for around $400-500, a little more could get you a 70D refurbished(~$700).
I recently replaced my T3i with a 7D for getting into wildlife and have not regretted it.

I have no camera gear right now. Am going to go with the kit lens to start, then add better lens as finances permit. Have been looking at both at various sites. Hope to be purchasing within a week. Have only used the 9 point AF, no experience with the 19 point.

One thing in the 60D's favor would be the tilting screen, its probably the only thing I miss from my T3i that the 7D doesn't have. For just general shooting, the 60D would probably be a better choice. You are already familiar with it which is a bonus. The 7D comes into its own with fast action/wildlife but I use it for landscapes and other forms of photography and it performs quite well. A 60D with an 18-135mm would be a good combo to get back into the groove of things.

The real problem with this sort of thread is that you are likely to end up with answers based on each users specific needs, likes and dislikes. For me personally I would never consider the 60D, nor any of the other xxD versions since, for quite a few reasons. The most significant I suppose is the use of SD Cards, I hate SD Cards, since I seem to be able to kill them just by handling them, I guess it could be a static thing with me, but I seem to be able to handle electronic components that are SSD's without having to constantly ensure that I am earthed. Also every time I try one out in store the control layout/interface options really seem unintuitive. The XXXD all button layout is fine, the two dial with joystick is even better, but the half and half system on the newer XXD's and the 6D is a right WTF for me every time. Finally one thing that I have to use a lot is the PC socket for firing my studio strobes. I have to shoot product shots on site at an industrial location where there is a lot of RFI that causes my RF trigger to keep firing when I don't want it to, and then not fire when actually shooting. Plugging a cable into the PC socket is a very simple and easy way to get around that issue, it also saved my butt once when the small 12V battery in the trigger failed, as did the spare in the bag. It's not a type of battery you can simply walk into most places and buy either. So for those reasons, none of which relate to what most people think are the important features of the camera, I would buy the 7D over the 60D. Actually since I couldn't afford a 7D it's why I still have a 50D.

7d is a much better camera in almost every parameter
If you do not minď the heavier weight go with it

Heya,

Same sensor, same everything except the build & AF and FPS system which all favors the 7D. Since the 7D can be had for around $400 these days, I'd say it's a no-brainer. It's only a bit more than what the 60D goes for ($300ish). But I think for the much advanced AF system and the FPS and weather resistant build, it's well worth the extra cash to get a really robust camera. The AF system alone is worth the difference. I got my 7D right here on this forum for about $400 with a low shutter count. I see them for sale all the time here too, so if you go for one, you shouldn't pay more than $400~450 in good shape.

Very best,

From actually having used one, a 60D is a good unit. Cat example shown.

I've had both of these cameras. Image quality is nearly identical, and not a differentiator. If I were buying one of them right now, I'd go for the 60D, just because I like the controls better. If you need AI-servo auto-focus, get the 7D.

For general purposes, I would go for the 60D.
For action purposes (sports, wildlife, events, etc), I would go for the 7D.

If you have the budget, I would recommend the 80D. Best of both worlds :D

Also if you want:
- Micro focus adjustments
- 19 point AF with more cross types
- Burst speeds and larger buffer
- Durability and build

So for $100-ish or so, you get these other perks, and they are well worth it on the 7D.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up buying a 60D and a 18-135mm STM lens. They are on the way and can't wait for them to get here!!

The 18-135mm STM is a great lens, I love mine.

The 60D is a great camera. It is my go to camera when travelling light (60D + EFS 18-200 + Sigma 8-16).

Here is the Petit Palais in Paris, from a recent visit, at 8 mm. No perspective correction, just cropping the bottom 2/5 of the photo and color/brightness corrections.
