Alternative to Canon EOS m5 (not released yet...)

I gotten EOS m1 for my wife a couple years ago, we never have been real happy with it and sold it 2 months ago. We were thinking of getting a Powershot 5G X for her, and ordered one from KEH camera and hated it. It is like a toy camera. (she said)

It looks more like what we are looking for; but wondering if anyone has recommendations for another mirrorless like sony of fuji or olympus?

Trying to find something under 1K.

This biggest issue I have is the lens selections. With the EF-M lenses is that the zooms are all very slow apertures. My wife had the EF-M 18-55mm and the EF-M 22mm f/2 lenses and preferred using the zoom.

The one they are pushing with the m5 is the EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. f/6.3? Thats definitely more of an outdoor only lens.

I know there is the EF adapter; but I thinkI'd prefer finding something closer to a roughly 24-70ish range with a little bright aperture, f/2.8?

At any rate, recommendations on a different system?

Even without it released, I think you'll find the Fuji system to be superior, more mature, with more lenses that actually matter and it's affordable in the range you're looking at. Canon is way behind the mirrorless game. Way behind. Even with the M5 release, they're still only matching up to what was already done by Sony & Fuji a while ago. So by the time it releases, Sony & Fuji will be several release cycles ahead and you'll be in the same boat as you experienced with the M1, only with an even harder to sell camera. The market for mirrorless is a lot more generous for Sony & Fuji right now.

Fuji + 18mm F2, 23mm F1.4 or 23mm F2, etc. Fuji has fast F2.8 zooms if you think she needs a zoom range.

Sony also has good mirrorless options and good zoom selections on the wide side.

Neither system is good for telephoto really, but that's a given and it makes it a "big" system anyways. So depends if you two value compact nature of mirrorless systems and smaller lenses (like pancakes and the like; not big constant aperture zooms).

You can get a body like the X100, X-T10, X-T1, etc, for about $500 or so, or less, with the discount, to have a nice small mirrorless APS-C with great performance, leaving you $500 for lenses. The 18mm F2 XF or 23mm F2 XF are awesome for a low light general pancake that is fast and sharp. And you can explore a 16-50 variable zoom for the outdoor stuff and travel/vacation stuff, if you feel the need for longer focal lengths and not a little bag of sweet fast primes.

That's up to your preferences. The really great lenses are not cheap, but they are unique and Canon will never have them for their mirrorless line (the 22 F2 from Canon is the only lens that even begins to pique my interests and I have the EOS-M and 22 F2 as well, and nothing more for it). Fuji has these really great little primes, like the 18 f2, 23 F1.4, 56 1.2, etc. They're costly, but they're not something you can get with Canon for a system like this, this small, in this price range really.

Take a look! You could get the XT1, 16-50 and an 23mm f2 for your asking price of $1k or so if you shop around.

For me, I would love to have an XT1 & 23mm F1.4, and nothing else. That little combination to me is magic. If I were moving into a mirrorless system, that's what I'd want.

Thank you very much, I didn't realize they were having the sell! She had the zoom and the 22 f/2 and never used the prime, so I'm thinking the zoom is the best place to start.

Any advise over the Fuji 16-50mm F/3.5-5.6 XC OIS vs the Fuji 18-55mm F/2.8-4 XF R LM OIS ?

The 16-50 matches very closely the EF-M 18-55mm she had, aperture wise. The Fuji version is faster; but worth the extra $175ish difference?

Every stop advantage matters to me. Depends if it matters to you.

50mm at F4 is better in my mind than 50mm F5.6. It's a whole stop.

Also, 16mm is a big deal compared to 18mm, 16mm is significantly wider on APS-C.

Would be great if it were F2.8 constant, which exists, but it's quite expensive.

Still, 16mm F2.8 for indoors is still fast and wide making for a good low light lens option. Every stop counts.

I like the Fuji bodies, and the lenses they have are very nice. I'm another one lusting after the Xt1 (or 2!)

Best selection though is the 4/3 which is a number of manufacturers including the Olympus you mention

You have lots of Canon glass? Get a M3.
If not, go Fuji maybe... or Sony a6300.

The X-T10 or X-E2 kit with the XF 18-55mm would be perfect by the sounds of it. The 16-50mm is great, but it's significantly bigger and heavier than the 18-55mm and it lacks stabilization, the 18-55mm is about the same size and weight as the EF-M version only it's a stop faster and WAY better optically (I own(ed) both).

Okay folks, I really appreciate the tips! Took advantage of the KEH special and ordered the XT1 with the 16-50. If the 16-50 doesn't meet our expectations, we'll switch it for the 18-55. (or something else...!)

Yes, we return the Canon PowerShot toy camera we tried a few weeks back. It was very easy to send it back!

I am actually looking into this alternative as well and appreciate every body that has given input. However, if I were to get into the mirrorless system and use only zoom lenses, I will probably go the Canon EOS M5 route, especially since I already use Canon EOS system. I can live with the slower zoom and save the money. Also, EOS M5 AF may be better than X-T1, though I will need input from others to confirm that.

I did end up going with the XT1, and love it. It's a bit different than the Canon system; but so was the eosM as well. Ultimately, I have been most impressed with the color of images, not just WB; but overall, really nice skin tones. We did endup getting the Fuji 18-55mm F/2.8-4 XF lens, and love it as well.

Will be picking up a couple adapters for using older glass; not sure which XF prime we'll start with. Lots of options!

I like the image quality more from the 16 mpx fuji sensor with 18-55 kit lens over my Canon 80D with 16-35 f/2.8mk2. For overall performance though the 80D destroys all of the 16mpx fuji's in Video.

If the Canon M5 had a decent mature lens lineup it' be more appealing to most average folks. You cannot beat dual pixel AF for a casual user wanting dead on accurate autofocus in video.

For affordable glass that is small is the 18mm f/2. The IQ from the fuji line is remarkable.
